I currently have a 1993 3500 Heavy Duty with a 6.5 turbo in it. One small problem, it has a cracked block. I also have access to a 6.2 military diesel with about 30,000 miles on it. Does anyone know if the the 6.2 will work in the truck or if the outer components will bolt onto the 6,2 from the 6.5? The truck is basicly used very little (about 2000 miles per year) so I am not that concerned with maximum power.

Thanks

If you want to do it the right way, use the 6.2 short block only. Use the 6.5 injection pump, lines, heads and injectors. The biggest difference is that in 1992 GM changed the injector angle in the cylinder head and thus requires different injector lines. The 6.5 injector pump has bigger plungers and flows more fuel. The 6.5 injectors are shorter than the 6.2 so they need to be used in order to match up with the injector lines. It is possible to put the 6.5 injector pump on your 6.2 engine and re-use the rest of the 6.2 parts, but you might have an interference problem with the turbo plumbing with the 6.2 injector lines, not sure. At any rate the military 6.2's had the same poor design head gaskets and I would at least want new updated head gaskets with a turbo on the engine for reliability.
 Where did your block crack and how many miles did it have on it when it failed?

The engine failed at 118,000 miles, the first engine failed at 81,000 miles(under waranty).
Will I have any problems with the electronics hookups or transmission? It has a automatic with overdrive which i have been told is all electronic.

Thanks a lot for the help

You have to switch the timing cover and HB onto the 6.2L long block and put a block off plate over the mechanical LP that alows the return oil from the turbo(from the old block). Where does the Oil for the turbo come from the head or block? you'll have to have that.
You could use the fel pro .010 gaskets ($16 ea) to reduce the cylinder pressure a little, when you redo the heads, and the ARP headstuds ($142) to hold it better than the TTY bolts they come with not to mention reusable if you have to pull the head again for a cracked piston or the like.

Howdy Kog,

Welcome to the site visit the welcome post and FAQs at top of this header, go thru the RPO list & update your sig so memory challenged folks like me don't have to try and remember you rides configuration at each post.

Electronics can be a problem depending just what you have with the truck auto or man trans 4L60 or 4L80 are important pieces of info on that front, what will work or not.

The tranny is a 4L80

Here's my advice cog, if your not concerned about getting a lot of power, and you want it to last, then sell the entire 6.5 engine/pump/injectors/turbo and put that towards rebuilding the pump/injectors in the 6.2 and whatever other stuff you will need like motor/tranny mounts/fluids etc.

I'll go with TDG if power is not a concern - 6.2 all the way.

If you want it to run as previous, I'll go with D.Cam - put the 6.2 shortblock under the entire 6.5 upper assy, incl -4911 Inj Pump.

300cc will not make that much difference with the turbo.

Wiring harness will lay right back in place - engine has speed sensor at the back of the block where a distributor would be - fits 6.2 exactly as 6.5
-4911 fuel pump has the throttle position sensor attached, and is direct bolt-on to the 6.2 IP.

Pulley and all accessory brackets and such for the serpentine belt are direct bolt-on to the 6.2, using the 6.5 ccw waterpump and fan\clutch.

6.5 starter is bolt-on.

So - your choice - be a lot of work, either way.
