Can you just run CI-4 Oil

I think you have to run CJ-4 with the LMM or at least CI-4+ IIRC

Yup, the container must say CJ-4, if the DPF is still installed.

If your DPF happens to fall off somewhere down the road, then a CI-4+ can then be run.

Another thing to remember is that CJ-4 actually has more soot control additives in it. And overall, I believe that the UOAs are showing very good results with the CJ-4's as far as wear results go.

The DPF's on the new engines (LMM, 6.4 PSD and 6.7 ISB) are just PART of the emissions package. The engines for the new generation also have a greater use of EGR. That EGR use puts more soot back into the sytsem.

If I had a new generation engine, I'd still be running CJ-4, regardless of DPF or not. If you choose a blocker/stick, that's a different story, or course.

There's a nice post in the new LMM engine section about the changes of the LMM over previous generations.

Mark, Sam's Club has CJ-4 Rotella really cheap. Amsoil make it in a 5w-40 also. I ordered a couple of cases for my truck.

One other consideration; even if you do not have a DPF any longer, if you suffer an engine hard failure, one of the first things that GM might require is a confirmation of the oil in engine.

For warranty purposes, I personally would not run anything but the CJ-4
