Don't know if this belongs here, but I'm still relatively new here.
Owner's manual supplement for Dmax/Allison combo that came with my 2006 LLY 2500HD shows a flat metal band type dipstick with a hashed area and a hole at top and bottom of the hashed area. The lower dot has "add 2 qts" next to it.
The dipstick in my engine is a round steel cable with a metal "bulb" type end and a flat notch cut out of it on one side with four (I think) horizontal graduated marks on the flat area. There is an "F" at the top and an "A" at the bottom. Since I am not an idiot, I figure that if I am between full and add I am okay. However, my questions are:
why is the dipstick in my engine not what is shown in my manual
What do the horizontal marks represent in volume, so that I can estimate what is needed to be added.
And most importantly, why does the service dept not know what the hell I am talking about. They act like I must be insane because I would like to know what the marks represent and why I have something that is not shown in the manual. They did offer to order one in to see if it matched mine and then maybe be able to figure it out, on my nickel by the way. GM service has gone way down the tubes at many dealerships I have had the displeasure to deal with.
