Pulled neighbors TT, 8000 lb Forest River off my bumper. Had my quad (650lb sportsman) in the bed, all is good except had a little head wind going up 395 and I got 8.8MPG hand calculated then down to 7.9 mpg. Now I can put my Wells Cargo 32ft. gooseneck with the tapered front end on there with the trailer grossing 11,000 and get 11 to 12 MPG. His trailer sits real high off the ground compared to my trailer. He complained his gasser 2500 was only getting 6 to 7 pulling it so I decided to pull it this trip, going to the same place we always go and other than being able to go up the hills passing everyone else the mileage was poor. My truck has about 34,000 miles on it. He was impressed with the handling and power it had versus his gasser which he says is in passing gear most of the time just screaming. Ill go back to my goose for sure.

I just pulled my new Forest River back from Fort Wayne to Denver. Same weight, heck maybe same trailer (see avatar)
I first got 12.5MPG across Illinois at 60mph... I was pretty excited truth be told... Then I fought a nasty headwind all the way back to colorado, and got 9ish just like you.
I thought, hey I'll try some stanadyne! I got two tanks at 7.8MPG. Then I dumped the stanadyne and got back up to 9ish again.
Yes I wish it was better, but no fooling there was a nasty wind heading across kansas and colorado, and my TH is like towing a parachute. I'm betting my mileage won't suffer with the car in the trailer.
Also, the "gallons used" reads low unloaded, and high loaded -- meaning if you only rely on the DIC it's low when you're towing. All my numbers are hand calced.

Yep, look how high above the cab the top of the trailer is. It's also really wide too.

Check this out, i just hand calculated my mileage coming back, no head wind and one tank was 9.59 mpg and the next one was 10.22. It was dark 395 stinks at night so speed was down a little. Going to fill up tomorrow and check the last leg of the trip on the interstate.

Sounds pretty similar then. I think the headwind really takes a lot of power to overcome.
I wonder if a bed cap would keep the wind up there. Might pay for itself after a few more 8mpg tanks!

The gasser has a long bed with a shell on it and it doesn't help. Read here one time someone was considering an air deflector and a poster replied that he used one for quite a while hauling for a living and noticed no measurable savings. He recommended that to save money don't buy one lol...
Ill go back to dragging my gooseneck around.
