Its right on top if you have the right batteries, mine showed green up intil a month ago its now black, which brings me back to the original question what does black mean, they are just a few monthe under 7 years old and they are 7 year batts.:)

Mine was born 01/11 six months earlier so I guess you have a feww more months left in them.:D

I swapped mine out right after Christmas. They still showed green but decided they were 6 years old and I would rather change out before they took a dump away from home. Must have read for 2 weeks on net before buying new ones. You will hear people swear by red tops, yellows and on and on. Depends on how much you want to spend for peace of mind. When I looked on Consumer Reports, the Sears battery that sold for around $150 was rated excellent. Napa Select was rated very good for about $85. Settled for Napa Legend. Next time around I would by the NAPA Legend instead and go to a NAPA dealer that had them and not one that only stocked the Legend and didn't want to order the select for me.

Black means they are on their way out and you are living on borrowed time. I just replaced my daughter's battery - a Delco - that was on it's 9th year. The eye on it had turned black a few months ago and she just started noticed it was starting slow.

Black means that they are not fully charged, I'm suprised that they are still turning your truck over. How long batteries last is not always determined by years, mileage has a lot to do with it, also cold starts affects battery life. Do not run your truck long with them not being green or you will also be replacing your alt too. Have you checked the voltage, both running and not? Do you know if your alt is charging? You must not have many miles on your truck.
I was refering to the second part of your question of what to replace with, you will get several threads on search under that topic. I prefer Optima's, have used both red and yellow tops and either will work, I run reds right now.
And as far as knowing, look at the miles in my sig, I do know a 'few' things about these trucks.

Truck starts fine, after about 15 seconds they charge up to 14 volts on the volt meter, from what I understand (after asking at several batt places) is to get a load test done, but I guess they are due for replacement after 6.5 years aldo they are supposed to be 7 year batts.

Still have my originals too, but waiting on summer to get new ones. Like someone said, better off to change at home than on the road away from any help with dead batteries...

must not have the right ones then. they just have the screw ports on the sides, no posts up top. so i guess ill just figure it out when they go dead, when they go dead.:confuzeld

Seven year batteries in a gas engine, but these diesel's use 'em up faster, be glad that you got out of them what you did. The OEMs in the '96 lasted about two years but then again that was about 110-120k miles and a lot of starts. Don't wait until they leave you standed to change them. I went thru several alts on my '94 before we figured out one of the batteries was dead, and she was starting fine too until the alt wasn't charging. Take 'em to Walmart or a parts store and have them load tested if you want, but I'll bet both are on there last legs.
