I was low on fuel the other day and just to be safe i put a couple gallons to get to town and a buddy of mine thought i was nuts for doing this. He thought the fine was $2500! I have never really thoght about this before only second time i have ever done this. I live in illinois maybe the fine is different in different states!? Just wondering if anyone new how much?

I do know that in some states, the fine is as much as $10,000 depending on the offense.

way too much to be worth it if caught. Think of all the diesel you could buy with that money you'll be paying in fines. Around here I have seen two trucks as of late being TOWED after being dipped by DOT. Not worth it. Just find somewhere that has the cheapest #2 and deal with it. Like 99% of the rest of us.

Normally in a non commercial vehicle they wont bother you. But as fuel prices rise you might see more interest in the DOT looking.
I was once told in CT by a DOT spot check that since I am commercial reg's that I'm subject to DOT checks. Since I have no DOT number and registered private also not for hire or any company logo on my truck I just blow by these stops.
But I was flagged down once years ago and told that.I was driving a K3500 dually which I had a flatbed on. With a pick up body I'd bet they wouldn't even care.
Problem is you never know.

Also if they catch you,you can't get your tax break on the died fuel.plus they go back a few years.and you have to pay that back also.I have also heard once you put the died in.It takes along time to get the color out of your tank.Realy not worth the chance.

I got dipped in Gila Bend, AZ. about a month ago. Pulling my camper through town to get some lunch....they had a mobile weight check in town. Since I did not have to be weighed, they put me in the next lane, stopped me and dipped my tank. Took a clear tube and shoved it in the tank, put a thumb over the end, and drew a sample. I told him I was not sure what color the diesel was since I had just filled up in Tecate, Mexico "150 gallons for $2 a gallon". But it was normal in color, and I went on my way.
Probably be more of these surprise stops as the price for #2 continues to climb.
