Hi there:

I just got the news from my dealer that my 2004 Ram (4000 mi.)needs $10,000 worth of work done on it at my expense... They say that a high volume of water is in the tank. I've had trouble with it for about 3 wks now and towed twice. They say Chrysler isn't at fault and is unlikely to do anything about it. They say that draining it, cleaning it out and refreshing the fuel might cure the problem but can't guarantee it won't have problems down the road.

Of course it's fri. late and can't talk to anyone so I have to stew for the weekend. Thought I'd toss some questions out to the public:

Why didn't my separator light come on? (never did). They said it was probably frozen. After first problem occured I managed to get into a warm place. Started the next day and ran fine for about 4 days. Then had to have it towed. They re-flashed the rom and said it was fixed. Ran good for a week. Had to have it towed, that's when found the water.

I can't believe that the truck didn't give me any indication that water was involved, it just stopped. Would start again but would just stop running.

I find it hard to believe that a vehichle as sophisticated as a cummins would let itself be damaged too the tune of 10 G's without a warning.

You diesel people are a smart lot. Maybe you can enlighten me.

I have a thread going on the RVnet forum. One reader suggested I post it here. I didn't even know this forum existed. I would appreciate any comments on my delema.

Thanks, Mike

Welcome,

Sounds like a lot of work the dealer is talking about. A fuel system clean and all new injectors? I don't know to much about Cummings. Do they expect you to go "Shure OK fix what ever you suspect! I think I would be there Monday morning to go "Show Me".

If it were me I would start with cleaning the tank, blow out the lines, new filter and add some Standyne or other additive of your choice to remove trace water and lube the pump and injectors. Depending on how much water the system tried to push through you could be back up and running good with just that. Long term who knows but I think I would take it in stages i.e. do what is obvious and see where you stand.

The Dealer may say something like "If we don't do all the repairs we recommend we can't stand behind the repair" as if they are now! If they are going to make it your show you might as well direct it.

Good luck with the repair of your truck.

thanks for the reply. Evidently they have removed (?) a litre of fuel from the tank and told me that about 70 percent was water. What puzzles me the most is that I have problems keeping it running 3 times now, twice towed in for repair and the water separator lite has not shown once for the 3 wks I've had trouble. The test light comes on when I turn the ignition on but never while running.

Either something is wrong with the system or design.
