now that i think of it,I actually bent the linkage where the shift cable joins.

ran over a stick in the bush.I straightened it the best I could but it must still be off a bit.

Aren't the NSBU's that are on the '04 model different that either the black or tan one? The "new style" ones are suppose to be problem free now.

Tranny could have been cold. Go to the Allison Transmission website and look at the FAQ's. There is something on the limited operation of the tranny with certain temps, tranny temp.

http://www.allisontransmission.com/service/faq/index.jsp?CategoryID=11

maybe this may be your isssue and it might not. but as soon as you are familiar with the limitations of your tranny, then you can judge for yourself. have fun and hope this helps, some.

i just went back to that page and the temp information is no longer there. they state to review owners manual. i know that there was mention there about the low tgranny temps inhibiting shifting and different gears working. but i just found it in a pdf file i downloaded from allison on this.

in -31 degree temps - 2nd and 3rd ranges only
below -31 - 2nd range only

i have the pdf file. if anyone wants it, pm me as i don't see how we can attahc a pdf file.

Do a search on this subject. I had this happen to me last summer. At first the NSBU was changed out for an updated one, no help. The dealer was going to hook up a reader and let me have the truck and when it happened I was to take a snap shot. He hooked it up and on the start up of the truck to bring it out of the service bay the "shift range inhibited" msg popped up. Further T/S with the T2 found that when the ignition sw was turned to start that there was a voltage drop across the terminals in the Ignition sw to the TCM of around 6Volts. He changed out the ignition sw and I have had no more problems. A fellow here on the page who lives in Boise Id. had the same problem and the dealer couldn't figure it out. He saw my post and told the dealer about it and they changed the sw and as far as I know has had no further problems.

For what its worth.
