: Hitch weight and towing capacities
Guys I am about to buy a toy hauler and I was wondering what my max hitch weight would be in a fith wheel set-up. Also what is the limit to what i should pull with my 4x4 single rear wheel Duramax? The Toy hauler I am looking at has a hitch weight of 3300 pounds and the hauler itself weighs in at 13,760. Please advise. John
Twister 03-17-2008, 12:05 AM You should put your truck specs in your sig so folks can help you. No idea what your truck is...
Depending on the year, there are stickers on your door pillars that will tell you.
Sorry I thought i updated my Sig...It is a 2007 Classic 2500 HD Dura CC SRW 4x4.
Twister 03-17-2008, 12:12 AM Yup...sounds like my truck...:)
Look on the pillar, and you'll find a sticker that states your carrying capacity.
A 2500 isn't gonna do it within specs, the diesel will pull it all day, but you'll be way over.
I sure wish they made that truck in a one ton without going to a long box...I would've gotten one in a heartbeat.
Coolbreeze 03-17-2008, 09:54 AM That is way too heavy for a 2500. When I put my truck on a CAT scale it weighs about 6900 to 7000 lbs with maybe 1/2 tank of fuel. That gives you about 2200 to 2300 lbs of "use-able" payload. If you wanted to stay under GVWR which has some legal bite to it if you were ever in an accident . To stay underweight then you need a 5'er pin weight of around 1500 to 1800 lbs and maybe 50% of folks do that. 3,000 lbs is strictly dually territory.
Mine is about 1300 lbs pin weight and it has gone through the stock shocks in a hurry, 27k miles. I have also noticed that when I put about 1 ton of rock or sand in the truck then that is about all she will hold without getting the front up pretty good. Therefore even a 2K pin weight is 3500 territory.
Do I also see some like funky 18" or 20" wheels in your Avatar. If they are 20" wheels then they will have to go because you will need E rated tires on that truck pulling heavy.
Don't take this the wrong way but you have a lot to study up on.

i had the same delema. long story short, i sold the trailer. 3300lbs is heavy for a 5th. mine was around 3k and i was 200 lbs under the axel limit. you will be very close to over the limit. if i were you id be looking at another toyhauler or truck. i have the same truck as you and my piller says 2423lbs carrying cap. add 2 people in there and your under 2k CC. too heavy. thats duelly country

OldSoldier 03-17-2008, 03:02 PM That pin weight alone will put you 1000# over the rating for your truck. When you add the weight of the Passengers, hitch, tools, cargo, etc, you'll be way over.
You can find the cargo capacity for your truck on the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the left rear door post.
The tires I have are E rated. As for the toy haulers they have heavy hitch wieghts so when you put toys in the back it decreases dramatically. If you add 1500 in the garage then the hitch weight would not be anywhere close to 3300...I see people pulling these all over as big or bigger with a 3/4 ton truck and I know there is plenty of motor...I Was just wondering about the load in the bed..

im assuming that they trailer you want is a triple axel? therefore putting 1500lbs in the garage will have little to no effect on the pin, because the triples equally proportion the weight. i have put over 1000lbs in my sandpiper at the time before i sold it and it decreased the pin by 15lbs. long story short you wont see a decrease in pin.
What size is your Keystone Raptor?
emerson 03-18-2008, 08:58 AM I feel that the max 2500HD ratings are quite optimistic. Even when I'm legal on the truck weight (9200#) the back squats badly. Airbags help immensly, but you need a dually to haul anything with a pin weight over 2K comfortably. I know many don't agree with me, because it hasn't bit them in the ass yet, but the rear suspension on the 2500HDs is too soft even for technically legal weights.
Thanks I appreciate all input. This is my first Duramax and I am used to the heavy rears on the Ford F350...So I am tyring to do my homework...
So if I can stay around 2400 to 2700 hitch weight I would be way better off than the 3300 I was looking at. Anything less than that the RV isnt worth buying they are way to small and dont offer anything....I mean you are looking at a under 30ft RV to get a 2000 hitch weight....30 ft isnt enough room for me and the wife, child and dog plus Yamaha Rhino and (2) 4 wheelers

weekend warrior makes a LED 3505 that has a pin of 1850lbs

299mp. 35' overall
emerson 03-19-2008, 08:10 AM That would help. If you get airbags with auto height control they will allow you to carry the weight ok and a weight distributing hitch will help with the sway control.

5th wheel buddy;)
emerson 03-19-2008, 11:24 PM My bad, posting too tired.
5th wheel buddy;)
stevebos 03-20-2008, 12:20 AM The sales literature for the '04 2500HD 4 x 4 CCSB lists a 5th wheel maximum trailer weight of 14,900 lbs and a maximum pin weight of 3,000 lbs.
The published maximum pin weight is suspect. At 2,160 lbs. pin weight, I'm at 5,300 lbs rear axle weight (6,040 lbs. max), but 9,580 lbs. GVW (9,200 lbs. max).
Given that you want to haul a Rhino and (2) quads, you may wish to consider floorplans that are open front to back (no garage divider wall, bedroom slide only).
Good luck! :)

That is an interesting comment. I'd assumed that the pin weight would decrease a little, or at least not go up.
Like the original poster, I've tied myself up in knots thinking about what size RV I can tow. I've got my eye on the new Keystone Fuzion 302 (which is very similar to your 299MP). The dry pin is 2405 lbs, and the GVW is 14,405. The door sticker on my '08 3500 SRW says 2682. I figure with passengers, hitch and pin I'd be right about 3000 lbs. I was going to give up on this size 5th wheel and go for something smaller, like a travel trailer. I am disappointed in that because the reason I went for the 1 ton was to pull a large 5th wheel (I didn't want a dually so stayed with the SRW). But hearing some of the rigs you guys tow, I may have to revisit it.
Can my truck handle something like this?

That information from the GM literature is confusing at best. No 2500HD diesel can carry 3000# of pin weight...that figure is for the gasser that does not have the heavy diesel engine...the weight of which is added to the truck and deleted from the cargo capacity.
The best way to find the cargo capacity is to check the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the left rear door post. It will list the cargo capacity to the nearest one pound.

the 3500 will handle it better then a 2500. if you like being a few hundred pounds overweight, go for it, im still overweight, but not 1700lbs like last time..
GlockWRX 03-31-2008, 11:53 AM Thanks for the input. I'll think it about it some more. I know there are guys that tow even bigger rigs, like the 40 ft Keystones and Weekend Warriors with 2500HDs. But that never seemed like a good idea. The 299MP was the one we were originally looking at, but now we are looking at the Fuzion.
How do you like the 299MP?
