: White Smoke???

Alright -- it's happened twice now.

A couple of nights ago I let the truck warm up, drove about 15 miles to a friends house and let it idle for about 10 minutes before we left. I drove +/- 1 mile on side streets and while waiting at a red light - white smoke started pouring out of the tail pipe. Enough smoke was coming out it was flowing past the front of the truck and the people stopped beside me were trying to get out of the way!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

The light turned green, truck drove with out any problems and smoke stopped.

It happened again last night (very similar circumstances).

No SES light, I haven't changed anything recently -- but the glow plugs were replaced last week (by the dealer, under 100,000 mile warranty) ----

Any ideas? Should I be concerned???

Thanks for any input!!!

--Jeff

By the way -- I have about 96,000 on the truck, no extended warranty.....

How is the coolant level in the tank?

Just went outside to check coolant -- The truck hasn't been run for about 3 hours, and the coolant level was about 1" above the seam. Looked normal to me?!?

Sounds like a clasic head gasket leak to me, but watch the collant lvl if it goes down it's going someplace ie out the tail pipe.

It hasn't smoked for almost a week -- I guess I'll just leave it alone for now....

Although it was a ton of "smoke", could it have been just condensation???

ton of smoke could be many things.

was the smoke thick?
was the dmax popping at the time?
was there any other conditions at the time?
how long did it smoke for?
were you accelerating hard at the time?

the reason i am asking is because it could be just something simple and not to worry about it. like excessive fuel in the exhaust or a sudden burst of water through the injectors.

do you run any fuel additives?
when was the last fuel filter change?
do you do the filter change yourself or does someone else do it?

when changing the fuel filter, be sure to look over the old one for any signs of rust or other contaminants.

Next time it does it, get out and smell the smoke. Does it smell like raw diesel or does it have a coolant smell to it? If it only smells like diesel, it might be a computer fart or an injector that has an intermitant leak causing excess fuel to flow into cylinder and then into exhaust.

Thanks for the follow-up guys --

NCMIC: Thick smoke? Yes
Engine Popping? No
Other Conditions? Nothing special, all gages read normal, no loss of power.
How Long? About 30 seconds -- no problem after signal turned green.
Accelerating? No. I was sitting at a red light. I didn't notice any "smoke" before stopping or after leaving.

I'm not running any additives (however I have 6 Stenedynes (sp?) on order from Eric http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif and I'll be adding one ASAP).

The fuel filter was replaced by the dealer about 2 days before the first "smoke".

Precision: If it happens again, I'll try and smell the "smoke." I'll keep my fingers crossed for a "computer fart!"

I really appreciate your help -- at this point I'm not overly concerned (because it hasn't done it anymore), but I'd like to learn as much about it as possible.

Once again -- thanks!
