: Tranny filter question.
1BIG4X4 01-28-2005, 01:14 PM i am going to be changing the oil in my LB7 and it is time to swap out the tranny filter as well. The Manual says not to change the tranny fluid yet so I was wondering how much trannny fluid I am going to lose when I change out the filter. Should i get some tranny fluid and fill the filter before installing it just like I do with the oil filter or is the loss of fluid not significant enough to worry about. If it is recommeded that I do add a little fluid what kind of fluid is everyone using.
Thanks,
Mike
Hound 01-28-2005, 01:17 PM You'll loose about a pint from changing the spin-on. I usually pre-fill when I do mine. Dex III compatable fluid, such as Dex III, Mobil 1, Amsoil, RP whatever.
Heartbeat Hauler 01-28-2005, 01:28 PM 1big4x4,
How many miles do you have on your truck now? You will have to change your tranny fluid and filter @ 5000mi anyway...or at least that's what was required in '01.

Fluid AND Filter???? Or just filter?? Surely you shouldn't have to change the fluid that soon.
Hound 01-29-2005, 02:35 AM I know I changed the spin-on filter on mine early, but after going thru the '02 manual (scheduled maintenance 7-10) I haven't found the 5,000 mile requirement that Heartbeat mentioned. The first reference to the Trans is at 25,000 miles in the manual that I have, and that is if the vehicle is used in "severe service" at which it's a filter and fluid change. I'm kinda curious what page that 5,000 mile requirement is on too.
Roegs 01-29-2005, 02:59 PM Fill the new filter to just below the magnet. I also add 4 oz down the filler tube to compensate for the little that drips out while I swap filters. Works perfect for me, and keeps the fluid at exactly the same level.
SAYWHAT 01-29-2005, 04:46 PM The 5,000 mile filter change is an Allison recommendation which does not include changing the fluid at that time. When changeing just the filter I do what Roegs does.By the way, you can purchase the filter for $8.42 including tax at an Allison dealer.Be sure to take filter part number with you to avoid a wasted trip. Black05Duramax 01-29-2005, 07:01 PM I don't think we even have an Allison dealer around here in Bowling Green.... Does anyone know if the Baldwin spin on filter for the tranny is any good?
Horse Trainer 01-29-2005, 07:37 PM See if you have Stevenson and Stevenson in Bowling Green - they are all over the country, and are an Allison dealer. Better yet, Greg L (lubespecialist.com) and Eric (Dmaxallitech) both have them on their web sites at good prices.
Chevysrus 01-29-2005, 11:50 PM Just remember to transfer the Tranny Filter magnet from the old filter to the new filter.
Has anyone told you to change the rear diFF lube at 500 miles????! If you have the G-80 locker you should drain that fluid soonest possble as it has a lot of break in material floating around in it.
Check out the recommended maintenance schedule posted on this site.
Have fun, great truck and even better if you do a little TLC and regular maintenance.
Good Luck

I don't remember seeing that one in the manual! Can someone elaborate?
Thanks.
Black05Duramax 01-30-2005, 03:31 PM Me either.....if so...I'm about 6,000 miles too late.
Hound 01-30-2005, 06:01 PM It's a big donut looking magnet that fits right between the spin-on fillter and the spin-on filter mount on the trans itself. You just have to remove it from the filter or the mount, whichever it is stuck to, clean it off and put it on top of your new filter before you spin it on.

Starting in 2003, it was no longer mentioned in the manual. Not sure why. It may no longer be necessary to change so soon. Either way, I did mine around 1000 miles.
Maxgmc03 02-02-2005, 03:58 PM I have an 03 Sierra 3500 in the main sierra bookpg.6-6 and in the duramax diesel supplement book pg. 6-6. It states allison transmission only replace external control main filter at 7500.
