: How much oil!!
mpricci 03-16-2008, 07:26 PM I just changed the oil in my 04.5 LLY. Manual states 10 quarts with filter. Bought a 2.5 gallon jug(10 quarts) of rotella t 15w 40. Emptied the jug and checked the dipstick. It was barely reading the Add level on the stick. Parked it on a level surface and checked an hour later, still at same place. I then added another quart of oil which brought me up to the full level on the stick. Am I crazy or have others needed more oil than manual states???
chevy_dmax 03-16-2008, 07:34 PM My '03 lb7 takes 11 quarts everytime.....no worries.
messejme 03-16-2008, 07:34 PM should be about 12 quarts with MT filter
banshee42096 03-17-2008, 08:36 AM 10qts here no more no less.
BudTX 03-17-2008, 10:05 AM Mine takes about 11.
macpherson74 03-17-2008, 10:11 AM Mine is also 10qts.
kbass24emtp 03-17-2008, 10:44 AM You have to check it with a warm engine to read correctly.
HD4x4 03-17-2008, 10:58 AM Unless you have a CUSTOM "Deep Sump" oil pan, it should only take 10 Qts!
Rotella T Comes in 4 Qt jugs, 1 Gal.. I have NEVER seen a 2.5 Gallon jug!
srjacob 03-17-2008, 11:27 AM All truclks with the same pan takes the same amount of oil, they are all made the same. Dip sticks are only guess sticks.
wahlrite 03-17-2008, 12:30 PM I have a fs-2500 and a baldwin B7 spin on filter and I take exactly 3 gallons/12qts
btfarm 03-17-2008, 02:36 PM 10 qts LLY and LBZ

TSC carrys the 2.5 gal jugs of Rotella
mpricci 03-17-2008, 06:50 PM got the 2.5 gallon jug from TSC
enahs 03-17-2008, 11:43 PM One possibility that hasn't been mentioned is that the jug had less than 2.5 gallons to begin with. Just had occasion to use a washed out plastic gallon milk jug for some fluid measurement. Used a 32 oz. graduated pyrex cup to find the exact gallon mark on the jug. Turns out I can't get a gallon of water into that jug. It's either the measure or the jug — and the suspect is easy to identify.
captjohn 03-18-2008, 12:35 AM Always 10 in my LB7 and LMM. I agree with 2.5 gal may not be 2.5 gal.
Duramax in Georgia 03-18-2008, 04:05 AM Also guys check your prices by buying the 2.5 gal jug. It actually cost more than the gallons or even the quarts around here. My LBZ takes about 11 to fill up also.

I was going to say the same thing. Wally world has the 2.5 jugs for $24.87. The individual gallons are $9.21.

X2, The manual says 10.7 qts with filter, but with the FS2500 adds 1qt. to that equation.:D
wynot 03-18-2008, 05:09 PM Don't know if it applies, but I have wondered frequently, whether capacity is simply aimed at the quickie lube places. I often put my vehicles up, start them draining, and let them drain overnight (or most of the day) before I get around to refilling them.
To refill to the full line - My Audi puts 6 qts in a supposedly 5 liter pan. The MB takes almost 8 qts to refill a 7 liter pan. My Tahoe 's dipstick is filled right to the a in max at the 6 qt capacity. Who knows with this 2500HD, I have trouble figuring where the oil level is until the oil gets dirty on that cable thing.
Just got back from the dealer as they added additional rear end lube to the "factory filled by volume" rear end to get it up to minimum. Chevy has some interesting wording on that one - they're filled by volume, not level at the factory, and shouldn't need oil unless leaking AND THEN, gives the spec on what the level should be at. Of course, this is the same dealer that lists 12 qts on the free initial oil change...the service advisor told me that sometimes they list out one thing and actually use less when there is no customer charge.
mpricci 11-29-2008, 01:23 AM thanks for all the info. mine seems to take 11 quarts to register full on the stick so thats what I'm going with
