: Highly trained car salesman
Slide 01-28-2005, 08:48 AM Was at the the dealer getting my first service done last night (free tires for life if they do all the servicing). Was out on the lot killing time when a salesman came over. Told him I was just killing time while they serviced my pickup. Kept bugging me, every vehicle I looked at kept asking if I wanted to drive it. Finally gave up and headed for the waiting area to try to ditch the guy when he asked what I had in for servicing. Told him it was a 2500HD Duramax that I had bought there back in July. That is when he asked me if my pickup had a diesel! Duh!! It's a Duramax!!!!! You'd think these guys would be required to learn the basics about the new vehicles they are selling.
aka108 01-28-2005, 09:09 AM Most of the car sales people go from one agency to another. Have seen the same people working at Chrysler, Ford and GM dealerships. Sort of drift with the wind. Even at Mercedes dealer the service writers have virtually no knowledge of the automobiles. Only dealer here that seems to have a steady sales and service force is Honda. Believe Honda sets rules for their dealers and will jerk a franchise out from under one who does not toe the mark and there are plenty of people out there waiting to get a Honda dealership.
ag4gt 01-28-2005, 09:10 AM You would think that if someone living depended on a product, be it vehicles or wigits you would know everything there was to know about it. Try Rat Shack…you got questions, we got blank stairs! I have been to many businesses and found that I was far more knowledgeable then the sales people. I am not saying I am a genius or anything, I just do my research.
BROKER 01-28-2005, 09:17 AM Man , that's going to leave a mark ! HONDA.......................nice new SUT..............3/4 scale Avalanche !
sprintmod1 01-28-2005, 09:23 AM Was recently at my Pontiac dealer to test drive a new GTO; the sales LADY I have used there for years had books on her desk piled high; asked her what she was doing. They within the last two years added a GMC dealership. The owner of the dealership has the sales staff, since they are the ones that got to sell them, order the vehicles that they get on the lot and how they are equipped. She was working on the order for vehicles 90-150 days out and it was their Duramax allotment she was ordering. She knows her stuff! Owner says that if they are going to sell them, they better know what's in them and how they were built!!
McRat 01-28-2005, 10:39 AM The average car salesman is an ex-pizza delivery guy who couldn't cut it as a telemarketer.
I've yet to run into one who knew more about the cars on their lot than I did.
When I ordered my truck, I had to tell them what was available and what was not. "They don't make a 3500 SRW!" "Just humor me and call them."
briano 01-28-2005, 12:37 PM when you go to a dealership to purchase, do your homework and bring all the info with you printed out or in writing. You would be surprised how many salespeople do'nt know anything about the vehicle you want or any type of discounts and incentives.
it pays to spend an evening doing research.
9W3-HD 01-28-2005, 01:01 PM I ve usually ended up telling the salesman whats up, as Ive found out I know more about what Im looking at (GM TRUCKS) than any salesman Ive ran across. I had to break the news to my salesman about the LLY differences and how to tell if the truck had the new motor or not.):h
coyotekid 01-28-2005, 01:15 PM I've found the same thing numerous times--salesmen at the stealers are flat ignorant.
I had a salesman at Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg, ID tell me that Duramax's are not offered with any transmission other than the Allison. When I corrected him and said that the 6-speed manual was available but not as common or popular, he proceded to CORRECT ME by saying that there was no way to order a Duramax with anything other than the Allison.
This comes from the "famed" largest GM dealer in the Northwest. He knew even less about Dodges, and they are the largest Dodge dealer in the world. For starters, he couldn't brag enough about that "Cummings" motor!
Needless to say, I wasn't the least bit impressed. In fact, that whole place just pissed me off. Another Idaho dealer gave me a much better deal and was a whole lot better to work with.
In case you're considering Dave Smith, I'd stray away. They suck!
WAskier 01-28-2005, 01:24 PM I was into jeeps for a long time. Grand Cherokees in particular, well my dad and I were in the dealer, who we had bought 4 jeeps from before, looking to get my mom a new WJ for christmas. I already knew the answer but just for sh#%s and giggles I asked the obviously new sales guy if they were still putting aluminum Dana 44's behind the V8's or if they had swtiched to iron ones yet. Well he didn't know the answer and brought out the certified jeep master guy who promptly informed me that there were only 12 of them on the west coast or something like that. So I shoot him the same question telling him I think they are still using aluminum diffs. Well he goes I don't think they make aluminum dana44's (they've been using them since 1994!) and proceeds to make like he knows everything although seeming a little rattled that a 18year old punk might know something he doesn't.
Well my dad goes back to buy the jeep a couple days later and this master jeep guy see's him and shyly informs him that I was right. My dad said he sounded pissed too. Hahahah, I love it even the certified jeep dude doesn't know his S#@t
olskool53 01-28-2005, 03:49 PM Makes you want to buy a truck from him!
aford 01-28-2005, 04:12 PM I placed an order for my 2500HD CC SB on Monday November 8 2004. I was excited about the new sunroof option and asked the Commercial Truck Manager whom I was working with if this was a cheesy add on or the same as the Tahoe or Suburban. He told me he was absolutely positive that it was the same and not to worry. So seven weeks go by and I stumble across this site and discover that the sunroof is actually a cheesy piece of garbage with a sliding screen. I call back and the same Commercial Truck Manager assures me that he has checked into it and that I/this board is mistaken. Two more weeks go buy, nine total, and my truck finally arrives with.... that’s right the dreaded cheesy sunroof AND the wrong color leather. So I have reordered the truck and am still waiting after almost three months!:(
So this sounds like a common issue that salesmen are NOT experts on the equipment that they are selling only on making the sale.
bundysgn 01-28-2005, 07:21 PM sorry to jump in here but BROKER are you sure you have 91591 mile on your 05lly that is in signature? if so you must get paid by the mile because it will be junk in 5 months at that rate.
dojohnso 01-28-2005, 07:36 PM I was going to buy my truck from a particular dealer. I wanted to custom order the options straight from GM, vs buying something on their lot. He kept telling me I couldn't have this or that, even though it was listed as an option.
Needless to say, a week later I buy one from a dealership with a guy that says: since your ordering it, get whatever you want.
A month goes by, the sales guy calls me from the other dealership. Wants to know if Im still in the market. When I say I bought from another dealership, he asks why. I proceeded to tell him that if Im ordering from the factory, I should be able to get whatever option I want that is available. All of a sudden, he changes his tune and says: why of course you can. To which I reply: you should have said that a month ago. Have a nice day!

coyotekid, I agree! Most salespeople are pretty pathetic. I had a similar experience as you with a large stealer in Billings.
I'm glad that my dealer in Belle Fourche, SD knows me by name when I come in the door. They are true sales PROFESSIONALS, and I can trust that they know my vehicle in-and-out! For those of you who don't have this luxury, man I feel sorry for ya. :o

Personally I had a great experience with Dave Smith Motors. I ordered my truck to get exactly what I wanted. I wanted to work with the local dealers and figured since all they had to do was order a truck they would be able to come close to the Kellog price. I didn't even expect them to match it - just close. Well their idea of close and my idea of close weren't - ah - well close. I called kellog and the salesman was very knowledgable. We went right down the list of options/cost I had from www.kbb.com (http://www.kbb.com/) and it was a done deal - no hassle.
