: do you think i hurt anything?
toolman 01-27-2005, 08:29 PM last weekend on my way back home from knoxville tn,i hit a snow storm the roads started getting slick,as i came out of 1 of the tunnels on I-40 the backend started to slide,i let off the gas and corrected everything fine, but at that point i decided i wanted to be in 4wd hi,so while i was coasting i pushed the 4hi button and it engaged,no noises or nothing drove that way for over 30 miles at speeds up to 65 mph, since i ahve never had a 4wd vehicle i was wondering could i have done any harm?
its an 04 2500 crew cab..
boy oh boy having 4wd is cool,i blew by the snow plow once,he had traffic back up over 5 miles..:D
thanks in advance for any thoughts..
Redapple 01-27-2005, 08:41 PM You're fine
aketay 01-27-2005, 08:41 PM If you hurt anything, then my my truck would have been broken long ago. Sometimes when I shift into 4HI over 30MPH you can hear the driveline clunk up to speed. I have run 4wd up to 75MPH in the rain and snow with no problems. At slow speeds, some tight turns will buck the truck and hop the wheels if there is too much traction available. No harm, no foul.
wickll 01-27-2005, 10:29 PM Toolman,
I had the same question about a month or two ago. Everyone agreed that the transfer cases are really tough and no damage was done. Helped with my peace of mind.
moss022 01-27-2005, 10:34 PM several people here have had there truck in 4x in speeds of 100+mph and i believe no problems. oh yeah that was in the 1/4 mile too. dont worry about it
We had our first real snow in NY last week, and all I can say is if your are nervous about driving in the snow then STAY HOME. What is it with people, you pass them sideways at 60 in the unplowed lane and they get all bent out of shape.

That's cold man :ro)
StraitDiesel 01-28-2005, 10:03 AM Just to let you guys know, according to our owner's manuals, we are supposed to shift into 4wheel high while applying throttle pressure... just thought you might want to know that, since aketay heard clunks and what not. I've always shifting with light throttle and have never had anything problems at all. I also have the floor mounted manual shift, which could make a difference over the push button.

403turbo 01-28-2005, 12:22 PM I love my 4x4, old man winter took a giant crap on my area in the last 2 weeks....I've been in 4hi for days and days at all speeds, works great.
The one word of caution for 4 wheel newbies is that 4wheel will get you going faster but won't stop you any better.........actually in T/H 4hi, the down shifting works really well.
Anyway, don't let the superman syndrome get ya in trouble
Tsckey 01-28-2005, 02:24 PM Nah, if the thundering, smoking, 4WD launches done at the drag strip as described here in other threads don't hurt anything, using it the way GM first envisioned it won't either.

Wheat Farmer 01-28-2005, 02:26 PM NO problem :ro)
JoshDmax 01-28-2005, 05:09 PM I guess I must be getting old....
Need 4wd, and going 75?
I must be missing something.
2fast2 01-28-2005, 05:51 PM Yep, you're getting old.
You missed that he forgot to change back out of 4wd, and drove at 75.
But don't worry, I'm not too far behind you.
MaineMax 01-28-2005, 09:00 PM 96 MPH in 4 WD many times
NCMIC 01-28-2005, 09:47 PM i have driven several of my old 4wd chevy's to 97mph and holding it there for hours. never had a problem. trucks still ran like champs and never had a problem. the only time i would see anyone having a problem is if you were to accidentally or idiotically put it in 4wd already cruising above 45mph. shift on the fly should work up to then, so i was told long ago, but i have never had the guts to try it above or near 45mph.
fireresource 01-28-2005, 10:38 PM that's what 4wd is for...
