Hello guys, i have a 2003 Chevy Duramax 3500. I just got a Water in Fuel Light after driving the truck in a little bit of rain with the gas cap left open..... (yea i forgot... the age is getting to me LOL )

1. How can i remove the water from the fuel filter. I see something that looks like a turning switch under the fuel filter which is accessible from under the passenger side fender. Does it turn? there are also two wires attached to it. I just had my fuel filter changed not too long ago so I hate to change it again.

2. Also, is there a easy way to drain all the fuel from my tank ... do these trucks have a drain plug?

Any help you guys can give me would be very much appreciated.

You all have a great weekend :)

Yes, the WIF sensor on the bottom of the filter can be opened to drain water. Carefull turn the part with the nipple.

The easiest way to drain the tank, IMHO, is to take a hose and run it into the bottom of the tank through the fill. Then take and air hose, run it just into the filler neck. Stuff the neck with a rag to seal it up best you can, fire up the air compressor and the fuel will drain out the hose (hopefully into diesel container and not on the pavement :D).

Since the lines go to the top of the tank, not sure of any other way, and there is not a drain plug.

Don't use a whole lot of pressure 5-7 PSI and let it run. Then take the filter off up front and blow out the lines.

If you got that much water in the filter, it's probably toast. Changing the filter is not hard. See the DIY section. I go after mine throught the fender liner. (fat hand syndrome!)

Take a clear plastic bottle with the top cut off and place it under the fuel filter. Loosen the water drain valve on the bottom of the filter, then while holding the bottle under the drain with one hand, push the primer button with the other hand. This will force fuel/water out the bottom of the filter. After you have about 4 oz in the bottle, pull the bottle out and check for water. It will be easy to see, it settles to the bottom. Repeat as necessary until all water is gone from filter. Tighten drain plug and then pump primer bulb until it gets hard. You might need to do this every few days to get all the water out. If power feels down, replace the fuel filter.
