I was wondering just how good the 6.6 Duramax and Allison Transmission really are? I am thinking about buying a 2005 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4 but I am looking for some input from other owners. How long does the Duramax really last and how good is the Allison Transmission? How much power could I give the two without any problems?

Thanks for any input!

Hi there-

Both myself and my dad are current duramax owners. My dad has a 2001 Dmax and ally with about 150,000 miles on it. My 02 has about 60,000 on it, and it's a six speed. We use our trucks primarily for working on our Farm and Ranch. The trucks are in harsh conditions 90% of the time, and we've been really happy with the way they've both been performing. Everything has remained tight, ie. doors, pannels, ect. Which is impressive considering all the off road driving we do, and the amount of washboarded county roads. Both trucks have been practically problem free. My dads truck has no engine mods, and mine soon will have some sort of performance chip/programmer soon. I know there is lots of guys on this forum who are running BIG amounts of power through their duramax's and are having good luck. It all seems to depend on how much money you can spend on improvments. Good luck in the truck decision!

If properly maintained, 500k + is not out of the question.

If you do any heavy towing, you will really love the Allison. I have always had standards, this is my first automatic. I pull a vermeer tree spade which weighs about 6000lbs loaded and only has a single axle. It handles it, as well as my 24 ft flatbed trailer great. Never thought I would enjoy towing with an automatic so much.
