: anyone ever put used motor oil in duramax fuel
drsorter 03-12-2008, 11:10 PM :eek:a few years ago my son and i experimented with putting waste oil in fuel in his 2.0 L merc lynx wagon we were able to run 50% oil before a lack of power was noted, the 6.2 would take about 30% but these injection systems are way different than the duramax
Busdriver75 03-12-2008, 11:26 PM check the fluids section, you might have better luck there.
jfa3189 03-12-2008, 11:27 PM why would you? save on fuel??
drsorter 03-13-2008, 04:21 AM that and use the waste and not put it the recycle stream just "recycle" it myself
Philbilly2 03-13-2008, 07:42 AM it's real... you can do it.
TOTHEMAX! 03-13-2008, 10:19 AM i think the key to the success is finding a filter that will get all of the small (2micron or so) particles out prior to using it.
Busdriver75 03-13-2008, 11:34 AM x2 on the very fine filter. my neighbor runs all of his used motor oil in his john deere tractors. he filters the used oil twice, and then blends it like 30% motor oil and 70% diesel. it definately burns, but his tractors also smoke a lot more than they did on straight diesel.
jfa3189 03-13-2008, 11:38 AM Yea I'd be nervous without a nictane or similiar filter. I just spent 40 bucks on an oem filter. I did just change my oil though so I need to lose 10 qts of oil. Anythoughts I was just going to take it to the station
finch 03-13-2008, 12:20 PM just a diesel thing i'm guessing?
JMJNet 03-13-2008, 12:26 PM There was a thread recently, last month that the person throw in about 10 qts of used oil straight after changing the oil. Well, the truck won't run. So he has to spent a good amount of money getting everything fixed including the fuel tank, filter and the IP. Then, the thread further told them that he needs to filter it at least 2 to 3 times may be more before doing that.
I don't have a $40K Duramax, but would you be willing to spend about $10K just fixing it after dumping the used oil?

To build on this, for many years I used a gallon of used motor oil per tank in my various diesels. So, it could be a gallon per 18 gals or per 25/26. My filtering system was either a coffee filter or paper towel in a funnel. Never had a problem with fuel filters, injectors or injection pump. Yes, it will run, and probably slightly quieter. Fuel mpg stayed the same.
It is a major pain, it's filthy to do, and somewhere, somehow, you will drop the container of used oil on the garage floor. Or kick it. Now you have a gallon or more of nice black oil soaking into the concrete and/or you. Personally, I found the oil had spilled from the shelf, down the formerly white wall.To do this right, you really have to add the motor oil just prior to refilling with diesel. Now you have a jug of oil that you're pouring into a funnel into your tank at the fuel station. The container gets oily, the funnel has to be put somewhere that the oil still clinging to it isn't draining out onto something you want, etc..
I suspect, but never have gotten around to checking out is that the diesel or the motor oil has different densities, and that they will separate one way or the other, given enough time. I had this mental image of two layers of petroleum products sloshing back and forth in the tank...
RonJT 03-13-2008, 04:51 PM I do it and it is really a pain to deal with..messy. I use the Napa version of the CAT 0749
and filter it in my garage. About 30percent used oil with 70%B99. Run it through twice. It is fine no problems. I thought I had some this winter but it turned out to be water contaminated fuel the forced me to use my lift pump to drain the tank.
The filtering cost is minimal because the filter you use in the garage does not have to flow very well just has to filter.
Just gets really messy on your hands and stuff but with the price of diesel I do want to throw anything out.
Busdriver75 03-13-2008, 07:02 PM i figured it out. if you dump all the oil from your oil change into a 34 gallon tank (longbed). that's less than a 10% blend. i wouldn't think you would have any problem with that amount if you'd filter it first. i bet the guy that had problems took his filthy dirty oil pan and dumped it directly into a fuel right into the tank.
TOTHEMAX! 03-14-2008, 10:26 AM how much smoke are your trucks making? is it noticeable?
wonder how much filtration a coffee filter filters down too?
drsorter 03-14-2008, 11:45 AM we ran the oil through a bypass filter before blending, the micron rating is .1 on that filter takes the soot out and any dirt that would be harmful, we didn't have the cost in them engines like i do the duramax the lynx was $1000 and we got the van for $350. with a bad tranny but thats why i asked here, and to note the engine in this truck is the second one the first one couldn't handle driving 71 down the interstate. met a guy in waterville ks once said him and his dad had tore down 10 or more (don't recall exact number) engines trying to determine cause of failure didn't think too much of the comment at the time till mine went for no appareant reason
roughstock 05-16-2008, 10:05 AM Ive run WMO in my dodge. No real differences noticed. Only a few gallons per fill up. Some cummins guys are running 50/50. They will run on more oil. It should be filted well. And run thru a water seperator filter. Other guys even run tranny fluid and swear by it. This is mostly on the older 12 valve mechanical motors. but is has worked well in the 24 valve. The 12 valve cummins will run on anything. Kerosene, veg oil, trans fluid, bio.
However, If I had a newer Dura or Cummins, I would have a hard time putting waste oil in a 25-30,000 machine, just to save a few dollars a fill up.
