: Duramax 2008 2500 crew cab. I was thinking of buying it for the wife
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 08:38 PM My wife needs a new ride. The Jeep is tired and almost dead. We have 2 kids and need something with 4 doors. I like the 2008 Chevy diesel 6.6. With rebates I can get a new truck for $34,250 with the allison trans and tow package. The only other option is the locking rear. It comes standard with a/c but nothing else. I don't need power windows and all the goofy stuff. It gets 16mpg around town and 20-22 on the highway. Any thoughts?
WVSilverado 03-12-2008, 08:41 PM Can't go wrong with the Allison tied to the Duramax - the combination is usually good for several hundred thousand miles
cujo489 03-12-2008, 08:55 PM have you noticed the fuel prices???
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 09:02 PM Well I have been following them but gas will be going up as well. Since I usually buy high test the difference isn't as great and the truck gets better mileage
MMLMM 03-12-2008, 09:06 PM My wife needs a new ride. The Jeep is tired and almost dead. We have 2 kids and need something with 4 doors. I like the 2008 Chevy diesel 6.6. lol, where did you get those mpgs, the salesman....?
with a good mpg tune you could see that
srode 03-12-2008, 09:14 PM 18 Hwy is more likely if you look at the poll on fuel economy for LMMs - maybe higher, maybe lower - there's a pretty wide range.
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 09:19 PM Well 18 would be dissapointing. My friends powerstroke gets 22mpg on the highway. He is an engineer and preety meticulous with his calcuations maybe i should get a used ford with the 7.3 (that what he is running).
MMLMM 03-12-2008, 09:21 PM if your that worried about mpg, um....you may want to look at a suv gasser/flex fuel.
trapman 03-12-2008, 09:24 PM If you do not tow, a half ton with a gas engine would be cheaper and maybe better milage.
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 09:25 PM Well even the advertised mileage for a 1500 is 14/18. Some suv's aren't that much better. The ford taurus was 16/24 also not greta. My current 4.0 Jeep is 15/19 on it's best day with a tailwind most of the time 15/17
homerjer 03-12-2008, 09:26 PM 7.3 was a good motor, had one, 22 mpg, maybe doing 55 mph on level grade. My average per tank empty was around 16 mpg. Then I had a 6.0 that wouldn't stay together, and then another 6.0 that wouldn't stay together(Head Gaskets). Now I am here. New LMM with only 1500 miles is already averaging 3 to 3 1/2 mpg better then both of my 6.0.
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 09:27 PM I won't really be towing. Perhaps once and a while. I like the longevity and reliability a diesel has. The gas trucks aren't great with mileage either. the same 4.8 I quoted above in 2007 was 16/20 with the new regulations it's 14/18
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 09:28 PM This is a dumb question but what does LMM stand for?
goodwrenchtech 03-12-2008, 09:35 PM it is the rpo code for the engine.
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 09:35 PM Thanks
Jaybeecon 03-12-2008, 10:32 PM Can you wait until the smaller diesel shows up in the half-ton? Probably another year and a half.
I can understand liking the diesel but it sounds like your needs are more suited for a lighter weight gasser. My brother has an '05 1500 CC with the 5.3. Averages 17 and gets 21-22 on the highway. This was before the cylinder deactivation which is probably good for at least another 1 mpg on the highway.
If you check the poll on milage here you'll be doing good to get 18 highway - probably 15 combined with the LMM. Just a heavier truck all around, not really set up as a daily driver as it's strong point.
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 10:53 PM Well your probably right. I wuldn't buy the new small diesel though until it proved itself. I also have a cars i would like to race. I figure if i get into racing this would be the truck to have. A little over kill for around town but great if i ever decied to tow a car. I have an alum bodied cobra and a 67 cougar that once finished will see some track tims

That is not too far off from what i get on my LMM. 16 is on the low side and 21 MPG is what I obtain at 65 MPH. Perhaps my truck is odd but i get these numbers EVERY TIME!
ng8264723 03-12-2008, 11:00 PM If I got those number that would be great. I wonder with a mileage tune how it would do. I've heard mixed replies about affecting warranties
07DuramaxHD 03-12-2008, 11:10 PM If you decide to go with an LMM lemme know if you'd be interested in buying one...I'm thinking about possibly selling mine...:)
gotdmax 03-12-2008, 11:52 PM If the trucks going to be the wifes daily driver I suggest having her test drive it first. I love my truck but my wife hates driving it she said it has to many blind spots and it's hard to maneuver in parking lots. But if you do go for it spring for the rear dvd for the kids. It's high quality and a god send on the road trips. Good luck on your purchase.;)
DieselLMM_6sp 03-13-2008, 12:22 AM lol, where did you get those mpgs, the salesman....?
i consistently get 25 mpg, on cruise control @ 55 mph, while commuting on flat ground. tested this about for about 100 commutes to work & back.
heavy city driving = 16 mpg
however, that's on diesel fuel. with B99 biodiesel i generally get about a 10% reduction.

That must be nice....i couldn't get that driving off a cliff with a tail wind. 14 combined is the best i get. And I have an easy foot and no stop and go traffic at all.
trouttrooper 03-13-2008, 12:53 AM So no power locks either? I think you'd find them almost a necessity the first time you try to reach to unlock the right rear door.
That's a big truck to have to deal with in town, parking, etc. Was the Jeep lacking in some feature that you need a full size truck to replace it with? What about the Colorado crew cab? Smaller, cheaper, same mileage ratings essentially. Could tow small stuff if needed.
It's obviously your decision. Just my thoughts for ya :D
TMyers 03-13-2008, 12:57 AM Pretty much what others have said. 11-14mpg in town, stop and go max speed 45 mph. On the highway pretty much right qround 18mpg. Of course I have a Dually and a 1 ton so I might be just a bit heavier and more rolling resistance.
Oh and if you get an LTZ your wife will probably be real happy. My wife loves the truck but still wants to drive the Vette more.

Must not be running any winter fuel :(. Up north here we'll be burning winter treated fuel til May., then start again in October or there about.
Sounds to me about the time you may be ready to tow those cars you would be looking to update vehicles again. I would seriously look at a gasser based on your needs, but if the want factor is there, than that is a different matter.

ng8264723 03-13-2008, 09:40 AM quirk chevrolet in ma
7fayette 03-13-2008, 05:05 PM the mpg has alot to do on how you drive a diesel like not puting the peadle to the floor it will screw your mpg:mad: My best friends wife drives his 6.4 powerchoke every once in a while and he knows because the mpg's will be a great deal lower than when he drives it):h why would you give your wife the truck I wouldnt think many girls would want to drive this big of a truck (every) day? not a soccer mom truck, BUT I WOULD HAVE LOVED IT IF MY MOM WOULD HAVE PICKED ME UP IN A 2500 OR 3500 WOULD HAVE HAD THE COOLEST MOM ON THE BLOCK:D:D:cool:
ng8264723 03-13-2008, 07:33 PM My wife is not like most. Although she is petite and actually is a good looking women. She loves cars and has a 73 MACHI RAM AIR four speed. She used to drive my extended ford van E-250 when we were in college and had no problems. She drove my pick up until we had the second kid.
