: Question about TCM learning

I've got a quick question.

I read an article in my last Diesel Power about transmissions. It was talking about the Allison and the TCM and it is constantly learning. It also said that you can drive it easily and then get on it you can actually damage your transmission.

My question is that when I drive my truck I am pretty easy on it to save fuel. But of course I do get on it at times and 90% of the time I am towing 6-7k lbs.

How can I keep from damaging my transmission? Or am I worrying about nothing?

I read the same article.

I do know that the TCM is constantly pulling in data, and adjusting it's operating parameters based upon recent use. The "learning" mode may or may not be specifically the same thing as the routine operating adjustments.

I was concerned because I'm always switching between pulling a travel trailer and running empty. I think as long as you don't abuse the tranny, it will be fine. The major killer of any tranny is heat. As long as the fluid temps are "normal", say less than 220 deg F, there should not be any real issues.

Keep in mind that the article is in a magazine written with a lot of performance upgrades for the targeted audience, and the input they solicited was from performance tranny builders.

They did mention that a stock vehicle with normal towing use should have nothing to worry about, save for keeping an eye on the temps.

If you leave the truck stock you should have no issues as long as you keep up with the maintenance, keep fluid levels where they should be and keep the temps down. Changing the spin on filter on a regular basis is also a good safety measure. I change mine every oil change which is every 5K miles.

Thanks guys.

My truck is all stock minus wheels/tires. I do plan on getting an exhaust at some point. I'd also like to add the bigger tranny cooler. At some point this year I'm gonna drain and fill with Transynd also.

sounds like good plans to me, the trans is and will always "learn" it is and adaptive trans to allow you the option to tow small, big or nothing at all and not worry about damage. it has learned parameters to adjust for things like throttle position and power amounts. if you drive more easy and occasionally beat it you will be okay. it already has data to support your needs. the problem lies when you have a stock trans but an adjustable power adder to the engine and go from easy does it in level one to holy shit lets race big boy mode level 10 300hp more and don't let it learn the added power to change the shifts and pressures. it is best to set it and forget it. but in your case you don't have that so you'll be fine:D

Transgo jr can help alot and still give you near stock shifting with normal driving.
