not only do i have the engine tappy tappy tap but i just got the dreaded trans fluid leak out of the front of trans. i've searched and read all the post i could re/copper washers on bottom 2 bolts, new converter if bolts have cracked it etc. here's the questions; trans must come out so with the miles on truck (146k) should i just fix what i find (leaking bolts maybe), or just assume i should replace the tc and go ahead and order one from sc or such.
trans shifts fine, no issues. this just started after a fluid change. fluid is at the proper level.
is this a nitemare job? done tranny's before, but never an alli.
all input is greatly appreciated

Allison does not have a rebuild program for the converter. Price of a new one is 1188.00 or so. That will get you another weak converter that you cannot play with and if you tow, will overheat. For a couple of hundred or so extra, you can do wonders. With the mileage you have you will need some clutches for sure. We have some great mods out, and more new ones coming shortly that will handle anything you can throw at it. Stay tuned, and do a little search.:D

I gotta go with Mike on this... I wouldnt spend the money on a stock converter. Not worth it. Go with one of the quality aftermarket units and think about going in the trans.. Lots of reading is ahead of you..

Are you sure you have proper level with the tranny at normal operating temp?
This time of year, depending where you live, it takes a long long time for the tranny to warm up to 160-200 Deg F., if it ever does.
Seems coincidental the leak started just after the fluid change.
I'd check level again, trans >160 Deg, engine running, on level surface.

yeah, i',m not that lucky. checked the fluid when i got back from an hour trip. totally warmed up. just don't know if i should pull the trans and just put the copper washers on the bottom b olts (but i just said i'm not lucky) or go with the overhaul route. don't really want to spend alot at this point.
thanks for the help

well, looks like i am lucky!! yanked the trans and found a leak area under the front shaft. pulled housing off and the big o ring was hard and flat in one spot. the clean trail left by the atf was a dead giveaway as to the location of the leak. now, the tc. it looks fine, no visable cracks and i must say, how the heck can the mount stud s crack. those are some heavy duty plates and welds on the tc. then agin, now that i'm putting this in print i ;m wondering if this is the stock tc. just got this truck so i don't know squat about it.
i'll keep ya posted once it's back together

The leak that happens at the bolt boss comes from the cover flexing from lots of torque. A friend who has a TC rebuild shop has billet covers made that cure that, but they are still single plate lockup. He says that his are holding up well with increased power, says that eliminating flex is as important as extra clutch linings.
