: Headgasket?

A week ago I noticed a white vapor from my exhaust pipe, It was cold out so I didn`t think anything about it. I went to the tile store and the guy told me to bring my truck and trailer around and he would forklift the tile into the trailer. I started it up and noticed the white vapor again, as I drove from the parking lot to the loading dock the vapor was pouring out the tail pipe. I stopped and got out and all I could smell was a sweet sickly smell of antifreeze.

I called the dealer, but he couldn`t get me in no sooner than a week, I was having a panic attack, he said it would be okay to drive . Every now and then I would see the vapor and the low coolant light would come on, it wasn`t really low, but I filled it up each time. By the third day, the temperature gauge would just lay on 160 , on the way home it jumped up to 260 fell back to 210 and jumped up and down the rest of the way home. I did not drive it the next day and found a dealer in Frederick who could take it that night. He was a really nice guy and said he would call me daily and update on what was going on.

Today I get a call from a guy that said he replaced two thermostats and rotated the tires and that it was ready to go. Huh? What about the antifreeze coming out of the exhaust, He said the only thing written on the work order was truck had temperture flucuations and no heat. I guess the service writer was in a hurry to get home.

He said he would check truck again and that the thermostats are not covered under warranty and that it would be $250.00 for that. I think I`m getting screwed. I`m don`t think they checked the thermostats and even if they were bad wasn`t it caused by the antifreeze problem?

Has anybody had injector cup seals replaced, were the symptoms the same? If it is a headgasket what should the dealer replace, should he change the oil?

Sorry for the long rant.

And tell the dealer where to stick the stat bill. Later! Frank

Tell him you'll pay the 250.00 if it fixes it, if not, he pays... then tell him to fix it.

Mine does this all the time, when the temperature is usually 25 degrees or colder... It goes away when it warms up though and it is not there at all when it is warmer outside... but I also don't have the other symptoms, such fluctuating tempatures and a antifreeze smell.

They should put a part restriction on t-stats. It would prevent ALOT of pissed off owners.

well, I called the s/w today and he said they were not replacing the thermostats. They think it is an injector cup seal. The best part is that they are taking out all eight injectors to make sure they get the right ones and replacing with new and improved? injectors.they said one day for injectors and it should be ready next week.

Should they change the oil or is it ok?

They had the motor open! They should change the oil and filter regardless!

How is changing the injectors going to take care of the anitfreeze coming out the tail pipe?

aprr454, they have to take the injector out to get to the cup and o-rings.

I guess I'm confused. Does the injector sleeve act as a "wall" in a water jacket in the head?

I had the same problems but with the added feature of the radiator staying pressurized even when it was stone cold. It took 3 trips to the dealer and 5 weeks and a missed trip at Christmas time to solve the problem (head gaskets) but it seems to be fixed now.

aprr454, I`ll ask the s/w, but I think someone mentioned that the coolant flow around the injector helped keep down the heat.

I miss my truck, I hope they fix it right.

wildbore, That would make sense if that is true. Good luck and post their answer when you get it.

Well, I got my truck back today. They replaced 1 injector and the seals, I didn`t get all new injectors like I was told.

Evidently the other dealer that replaced four injectors last year, screwed up the seals on the one cup when they put it back together. At least I didn`t have to pay the $100.00 deductible, They didn`t mention it and neither did I.

I also have more of the story in the Tech forum

Yes

In this pic you can see the sleeve around the injector.
