My understanding from looking at some web sites is that your choice of hitch does not determine if you can use a weight distributing setup but the ball mount definately does.

For instance, if I get a Putnam XDR hitch and and B&W ball mount, if I wanted to go with a weight distributing set up I would just need to replace the Ball mount with one that came with a WD Kit, right?

Please correct me if I am wrong, if I am not, what is the best WD kit? I really like the B&W ball mounts, but would maybe like to get a WD setup, just in case.

thanks.

You are right about the Putnam XDR being used with either ball mount. The ball mount is basically what makes the hitch weight distributing. It uses the spring bars to transfer weight to the front of the truck and the trailer axles.

The B&W does not have anywhere to mount the spring bars and is therefore a weight carrying hitch.

As far as having a WD hitch just in case, if you got a setup that can be moved from trailer to trailer you shouldn't have a problem IMO. Sway control will be another issue as I think some are welded directly to the trailer frame.
