Is there a place on my '82 burb that I can find the rear end ratio?

If you're lucky to still have the build sheet in the glove compartment....

otherwise, you'll have to pull the cover and count the teeth.

Make a mark on brake drum/backing plate. Jack up that wheel, keep other wheel on the ground. Make a mark on the pinion flange and housing. Rotate wheel 2 complete revolutions while counting number of times pinion turns. It will likely be either 3.7, 3.4 or 3.0;)

That wouldn't be accurate due to the spider gears though.....

I was hoping there might be an ID tag or # somewhere, but it looks like I'll be doing it the hard way.
Thanks anyway

By doing it the way I posted it compensates for the spider gears and it is plenty accurate that I can tell any factor ratio. If the rear end had a detroit locker, then all you would have to do would be rotate the pinion until the brake drum makes 1 full revolution. By turning the brake drum 2 full revolutions and counting the pinion rotations it takes the spiders into consideration. Try it it works.:)

Most GM housings have an axle code stamped into the top of the right side axle tube, next to the center section (bring a scraper and a wire brush). If correct and nobody has changed any internal parts, this will give you the ratio as well as the size/type info you need to procure parts.

Thanks guys.
