Ok so there was a guy asking about the SS Diesel set-up vs. AFE/ others a little while ago, and this weekend I finally got around to fixing my set-up. These pictures should clear up anything about the SS Diesel Set-Up. Now first off, I like SS Diesel Supply and Walt seems to be a nice guy, however, the air filter product is not only inadequate, as it clogs prematurely, the quality of the workmanship is horrible. I have included pictures of how the inner stainless steel cap fell of the filter and got caught by my MAF sensor, had it not been there it would have gone into the compressor. Just look at the size difference between the SS and the stock filter.

this is the SS Set-up (below)

This is my temp. homebrew set-up. (below)

and this is the horrible "dual cone" filter used by the SS system. You can also see where I had to screw the chrome "donut" back to the top of the filter when it ALSO FELL OFF(below)

Now I don't like to trash ANYONE, but I needed to be honest for future reference to the SS System. I can not speak for anything else as i have no used it, but I can say that the SS system is an absolute waste of money, at 125 dollars compared to my 5 bucks in PVC tubes and a 20 dollar napa filter.

Unfortunately, you're not the first one to have the filter come apart on you. IIRC, I've seen that here on the forum more than a few times. However, I will also say that Walt always stood behind the product and took care of the customer - at least from the posts I remember reading.

Hey North Maine:
I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing you've done. I got the elbow and filter from Walt too. Then I bought the '97 air box set up from a salvage yard and found it to be too restrictive by the elbow going to the turbo.
So where did you get the green elbow? Does it fit tight into the air filter? Is your air filter up against the coolant reservoir so it stays put with the elbow?

Not about the filter setup, but what is the hose setup thing you have on the third picture at the top above the coolant tank?

Ahhhhhh 96GMC6.5L that is the hosing for my WVO shell-in-tube heat exchanger, not attached at the moment. As for the elbow... it's spray painted green, What I did is I went into the local Do It Best hardware story with my filter, SS elbow, MAF sensor, and went to the PVC supply till I found what I wanted. It DID take some modification... the Elbow is wider on the Filter End,(to accept 3 inch tube) just 3 inch on the MAF end, and the maf end had to be cut a little to make the filter clear the hood hinge. On the filter end of the PVC elbo I put a 4 inch long piece of 3 inch tube in, then built up the outside of the exposed tube with ducktape covered with electrical tape in order to keep a tight seal with the 3.5 inch (approx) filter inlet. It is homemade no doubt, but it works.

You may just want to trade the PVC for a 90* exhaust elbow. Check my garage. It will withstand any heat better and you will be done. I am thinking of going with a similar filter as yours and making my AFE filter go away.

I think I'll do that when I have my real cold air intake build, complete with stainless louvered vent on the fender pushing cold air into a seperate air box.

I have not had a problem with heat after my snorkle was removed, in fact I've always run cold. I thought about building an air box but have found no need for it as of yet. Hope you get what you want figured out as a stainless box would look good.:)

Haha Deff. is nice having friends with bug boats, no doubts about that... you said you run cool... My engine doesnt overheat of anything I'm just talking about intake air temp.... the lower the better, more initial density, whether intercooling or not. I really hope to get on top of the intake box soon, but you know there is just SO much I want to do an not enough cash! I'm still a student here at Maine Maritime... so it kinda depends on what Chevron pays me this summer working on their tankers! Federal law mandates I must make 28 dollars a day or more... and at 90 days at sea manditory im looking at... oh a big old 2500 before taxes... that wont go far.

Something tells me when you get out of school, the $$$$ will be much better, then you can send some lobsters.:D
I'm not intercooled and since the new exhaust, my EGT's have dropped a good bit as well. I have never had a problem with any of my temps and you have a bit cooler temps up there than I do.;)
BTW, with the $28.00 per day, do they at least fill your tank when it's needed:rolleyes: I drive more than $28.00 per day with the prices the way they are now.:(
