On previous filter changes I had used Baldwins, and the Baldwin I took off had the inlet holes around the outter edge similar to the Allison filters. No problem with the magnet on those.
But today I had a Napa Gold 7701 and witnessed first hand that the holes are closer to the center. I had heard the magnet covered the holes, but I would like to say, IMO, THE MAGNET COMPLETELY COVERS THE HOLES ! ! ! Eyeballing it, I don't think there was 1/32" available for the oil to sqeeze by to get into the holes.
The threaded part and center part of the filter head is steel so I considered sticking the magnet up there and hoping it didn't knock free and fall down and cover the filter holes. Too risky for me.
Digging around my junkpile (ok, my workbench) I found what I think was an old aluminum oil pan gasket from a Toyota RAV4. It was a perfect fit to use as a spacer between the filter and the magnet, guaranteeing at least 1/8" of space between the magnet and the holes. (The spacer washer outter diameter is about the same as the inner diameter of the "circle of holes".)
If you do this, make sure the thickness of the extra washer doesn't prevent the filter gasket from sealing.
If I hadn't found the washer, I would have glued the magnet to the outside of the filter.
This seems to me like a serious flaw by Napa/Wix. Otherwise, I'm very impressed by their filters.
