: Really loud turbo... bad?

Hey all, I have an 01 duramax, which I drove about 150 miles today, then stopped for a half hour. When I got in it again I heard a really loud whine that overtook the engine noise, and it persisted even after I let off the pedal. While idling it would whine loud over 1000 rpm...did my turbo go out? and if so how tough is it to fix?

thanks,

Charles.

its more than likely the fan. the turbo should just whistle.

The fan sound like a freight train.

Question #1: Have you pissed your wife/girlfriend lately?

Question #2: Was she in the seat next to you?

In my truck the fan noise tends to go away after the truck is pretty much warmed back up (@5-10 min). Have you tried popping the hood and trying to isolate where the sound is coming from yet?

I think if it is the fan you should be fine to drive it, just keep an eye on coolant temps at low speeds and rpms.

It's the fan and it usually goes away after you hit around 35-40mph.
