: Rotella T oil question?
07DuramaxHD 03-09-2008, 10:52 PM Ok guys...I won't be far from changing the oil on my 07.5LMM and I'm thinking about going with Rotella T since it's readily available around me. I was just wondering if Rotella T would be a good choice of oil for me and I was wondering if any of you have any oil analysis reports that I should be aware of? Also...please point me in the right direction as far weights (5w-30, etc.) because with this being my first diesel, I'm really unsure. :cool:I'm sure you guys will lend a helping hand.
Gman66 03-09-2008, 11:20 PM Excellent oil! 15w40 is the standard weight for a diesel.
slick121985 03-10-2008, 02:33 AM Gman66 is correct. You need a 15W40. Rotella is an excellent dino oil. They also make a semi synthetic 5w40. If you run synthetics, thats the weight you'll run, however with the DPF, you need a CJ-4 Oil, and the only synthetic CJ-4's are Amsoil, Mobil 1, and a few others. For dino oil, good choices are Mobil Delvac 1300, Rotella T, and Delo. -Murph
skammtoo 03-10-2008, 05:01 AM I just changed my oil for the first time and used Rotella T 15-40. I've been using Rotella in the old diesels in my boat for years.

Did you use the Rotella T triple protection 15w-40 (dino i'm guessing)? Just wondering...I was checking it out the other day at the local Wally World...hit me back up if you don't mind...
All I can find is the new Rotella 15W-40 that says triple protection on it. It is CJ-4,CI-4 Plus, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4/SM, SL and SJ rated. I have been using it for about 11,000 miles now and its easy to find about anywhere. Lucked up one time and found some at a Wal-Mart for about $6.50/GAL. Bought about 6 gallons but now wished I had bought more, because it is up around $9.00/GAL. now. Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic was about $16 or so a gallon just the other day. I don't think the 5W-40 SYN. is CJ rated though. I have heard alot of good reports about Shell Rotella 15W-40. Trucking companies have used Rotella for years with great success. Its a good Dino Oil along with some others like Mobile Delvac and Delo 400. Which one is the best? Who knows and does anyone have proof that one brand of oil will allow the motor last longer than the other one?
BigBadAllis 03-10-2008, 10:55 PM Rotella T Dino is good oil. They do still make the Rotella T CI-4+ now called advanced soot control formula. As stated above the triple protection is the CJ-4 formulation. I think in most parts stores, wal marts types you will only find the new stuff. The CI-4 advanced soot is mostly sold by commercial jobbers and distributors.
AndrewFessler 03-10-2008, 10:58 PM I've used Rotella T for as long as I can remember. Usually by it in 2.5 gallon jugs.
Idle_Chatter 03-10-2008, 11:30 PM I've used a LOT of oil in 156,000 miles and it's mostly been Rotella-T. Excellent diesel oil and a mainstay in the OTR heavy diesel market for decades.
07DuramaxHD 03-11-2008, 12:12 AM great news to hear...looks like i'll be going to wally world to pick some up...keep the info. comin guys...thanks again :)
Just put some in my rig Sunday...good stuff!
Bammer 03-11-2008, 12:20 PM Whats the coldest temp that dino wouldn't be suitable for??? 0° or lower/higher???
jpringle3 03-11-2008, 12:33 PM People keep talking about Mobil one having CJ oil. I want to use it next Fall, so I go to their web site and there is no mention of CJ rated oil on it, either they are behind on the site or they don't have it. PLAY SAFE!
alvareracing 03-11-2008, 02:37 PM Rotella T for me too! so far so good and you can change it sooner due to being the right price.:D
BigBadAllis 03-11-2008, 03:41 PM People keep talking about Mobil one having CJ oil. I want to use it next Fall, so I go to their web site and there is no mention of CJ rated oil on it, either they are behind on the site or they don't have it. PLAY SAFE!
It's under Delvac 1. Also Delvac 1 ESP. I don't think they're packaging it under the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck labek anymore. The CI-4Plus was labeled both ways, but was the same product. The Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck packaging was typically in quarts and targeted to the general public buying at parts stores and big box stores. The Delvac name was typically targeted to truck stops and commercial distributors and jobbers.
07DuramaxHD 03-11-2008, 04:48 PM Yeah from what I saw at Wal-Mart the stuff is really reasonable...in fact it won't be that much more expensive if any at all than when I changed the oil in my 02' T/A Ram Air...
HEAVYdutyDMAX 03-11-2008, 05:15 PM Ive always ran rotella T in my truck also, never a problem.
grannyred 03-11-2008, 08:00 PM Rotell - T for 60,000+ miles, change oil and filter every 5,000, no problem so far. awaiting oil analysis results. will post when i receive them
BullydogPowered 03-11-2008, 08:13 PM i used rotella 15-40 which is the recommended weight until i started racing my truck and then i ran the rotella synthetic 5-40 for the rest of the time. no trouble with either and i extended the interval in the 5-40 to 6k miles unless i towed for long distance or raced more than once a month.
wil2007 03-12-2008, 12:04 PM Is the rotella triple protection ok for the lbz?
Cirrus 03-12-2008, 02:19 PM Yes...even tho' it's a CJ-4, it is backwards compatable for all diesels.
Cirrus 03-12-2008, 02:21 PM This is from the Shell website:
Are API CI-4 PLUS and API CJ-4 oils compatible?
Yes, and they can be mixed without fear of adverse chemical reactions causing deposits or additive fallout. However, mixing in API CI-4 PLUS oil for top-off can result in a reduction of performance of the API CJ-4 oil, which offers higher levels of protection than API CI-4 PLUS oil.
precision37 03-12-2008, 03:45 PM The local Wal Mart now has Rotella Synthetic 5w40 in CJ-4. New style jug with two handles(?). Just under $17.00/gallon.
