: Injectors vs injector pulse time

I have been wondering, would it be better to get a set of injectors to help get more fuel in in a shorter amount of time vs using tuning to hold the injectors open longer? If you were to go with aftermarket injectors you could inject the same amount of fuel in a shorter time which would would, in theory, allow you to reduce your timing and keep the fuel in the bowl of the piston better, rather than having it spray on top of the piston.

Lately I have been thinking if/when I do any more mods to my truck I'd like to try a set of injectors. Anyone done any testing of injectors on single CP3 trucks, or on any truck for that matter?

I would tend to say yes if you know exactly what to do with your rail pressure, timing, pilot etc.

i had asked about timing and injector pulse width in this thread because i was curious about the patterns on my pistons from the injectors.

Josh

This might help you.:)

Setup is just a 2.6 legal modified 70mm Cheetah charger, 90HP injectors, and a very tame efilive tune and a stock unmodded CP3. I gotta say the injectors worked just as we had hoped, made that power with only a max of 26 degrees timing and 2100 microseconds of pulsewidth with egt's topping out at 1450. Needless to say I was very happy.

That setup made 630hp and 1147tq. Injectors are definatly worth it.

If you are looking for some basic math it goes as follows

60000/RPM = Msec per revolution
Msec per revolution/360 = Msec per degree of movement

So now you can see how far the piston moves for each degree of crankshaft position at various engine speeds. Try looking at 3600 RPM with 3 Msec of injection time and you will begin to see why injectors are a must at higher power outputs and higher RPM's. You can figure out the amount of fuel needed for your power setting and see how much time you have to get it into the bowl. To use the fuel properly you have about 1.25 Msec at 6000 RPM to get all your fuel into the cylinder.

jneal, what kind of rail pressure were you holding on that dyno run? Do you have any issues with your truck smoking at idle or anything like that? Have you experienced any negatives from the injectors?

We held 26,000 on the dyno and on the road. I have so far found no negatives, but remember, it's only been running for 1 day now. And no smoke at idle.

It held 25,100 on the log @ 2100us pulsewidth. The truck doesn't haze at idle.. it's all in the tuning. There's more in it.. the log showed 38 psi. This charger should run well out to 50psi. I think 45 psi would have netted another 20hp since there was some smoke visible in the vid's.

IAT's on that run were 75 degrees. Good boost ;) Efficient charger :D

Just tips, but not replacements, they are your tips honed out.

hey jneal, what are your thoughts on honing out hte tips for some power gain in a daily driver? how does it perform on the street and what kind of MPGs are you seeing before/after??

I truthfully can't answer any of your questions, I don;t drive my truck daily and mainly use it to sled pull. I drove my truck from the shop to danville and that's the most I drove it in the last 2 months.

But with the right tuning I believe the injectors would be fine in a DD.
