: API; CF and CF-2 oil??

First off sorry for starting a new thread when I could have just replied to my other post, but internet is in short supply here and I kinda need to quickly reach those that know...

Here is Mexico the only diesel oil is straight 40 and 50 weight, which I know the 40 is ok, but it's the API markings I'm worried about. Since I don't speak very good Spanish, I can't translate the back of the bottle. The owners manual for my truck calls for API CG-4 or if none can be found, CF-4/SH. The API markings for the oil here is only [CF]or [CF, CF-2].

Will using SAE40 with [API: CF, CF-2] cause trouble? I'm only adding some to top off the remaining Delo 400. I'm right at the add line, so I'm only going to add 1 litre.

A side note too is that about 4000km (mainly highway) after a full oil change and top up, I'm down to the ADD line. Is that normal usage? I do have a very slow drip from a cracked drain plug washer, and seeping oil lines(no drips noticed when engine not running or idling, just wet around the connections), and I can't find any other drips. I'm new to this truck so I have no idea what is normal usage.

Thanks

The oil type I cant help you with, but as for comsumption, that isnt BAD, but it does mean you have some wear in the engine (most likely) When running take the oil filler cap off and see if there is anything coming out. If there is, this is blow-by... combustion gases escaping past the pistons, and can be a cause of some oil consumption. You usually wont see this becuase the stock system vents it to the turbo inlet and burns it with the intake air.

Yeah there are little whisps, not too much I don't think. Even on a brand new engine there would be some blow-by right?

thats not too good about the oil loss. maybe something loose under the truck? did you fill the oil filter before putting it on the truck? i know that the filters are quite large and can take a bit of oil to fill them up. i'd say check for something loose under the truck. also check your CDR valve. if it fails i've heard it can cause oil to be pushed out of the front and rear main seals. not sure how true that is(in other words don't take my word for it) but i had a bad CDR valve and i had a good size oil leak around the front main seal. i replaced the CDR valve and slowed the leak but its still leaking. i have to replace the front main seal. also check to see if your drainplug is tight. other things could be leaky oil cooler lines, etc. 4,000km is about how many miles just for my reference?

Some oil assistance:

CF - Off Road Indirect Injected Diesel Engines

CF-2 - Severe Duty 2-Stroke Diesel Engines

CG-4 - Severe Duty 4-Stroke Diesel Engines with 1994 Emiss and LSD Fuel

If I had to make a recommendation I would go with the CF 40w oil, although not ideal. The 6.5 is indirect injected and four stroke so the CF-2 is not an option, however you should be ok with the CF. However CF is designed for straight pipe exhaust applications (offroad) and may damage the cat converter if equipped.

Hope this helps.

Awesome info, thanks! Where did you find that out? Now the bottle I did get (but havenīt used yet) has both CF and CF-2, so would that work too, or should I just get a bottle of the straight CF? All the bottles show pictures of Semi rigs on it if that means anything? It`s only about $4 a bottle here so its pretty cheap. I just want to top off the tank for about another 1000k, then do a full oil change with the Delo 400. Iīm pretty sure I still have a cat

....maybe I should just get another bottle of straight CF and use that...what the hell are the guys that drive new diesel trucks here using? I canīt seem to find anything other than these two types of oil!

I actually found some 15-40 API CF-4 so that is close enough for the time being

CF-4 is perfect, thats the four stroke oil.

I'm in charge of the lubrication where I work, I'm paid to know these things.
