Has anyone installed the AVIC-D3 into a 2008 GMC Ext Cab Dually with the SLE2 interior and the standard Audio System. I went to crutchfield and entered my truck type and it stated that the unit wouldn't fit? I'm waiting on a reply from them or anyone who has done this? I would think that if it goes into a 7.5 2500 NBS it should go into the 3500?

Crutchfield gave me the following answer:
"Thanks for shopping the Crutchfield website.
I’ll be glad to help with your question about upgrading the radio in your ’08 GMC Sierra. According to my database, the AVIC-D3X is indeed not listed as a recommended fit for your truck. It seems the available depth in the radio cavity location is the limiting factor.
The installation depth available in your Sierra is about 6.74”. The installation depth of the AVIC-D3X installed in your truck is about 6.88”. The difference is about 0.14”, which of course isn’t very much at all. Additionally, we factor in about ¼” to ½” depth so the wiring harness at the back of the receiver has enough room. Given all of this, the AVIC-D3X should fit your vehicle – but you’ll just want to be aware that this depth issue is the reason that we don’t list it as a fit. I hope this helps".
I could install the AVIC-N4 but I didn't want to spend that much and I am waiting for another reply from Crutchfield to see if the existing factory CD/MP3 player will integrate with the N4.

My Alpine IVA-W205 would not fit in mine at first, you have to trim the back of the housing. When I say trim I mean cut out. It will fit and wont cause any problems.

I never installed one in the new bodystyle, but I installed an avic in other things and its pretty straight forward. the first problem you will come across is finding a wiring harness for it. If you don't have onstar, the wiring harness adapter on ebay will run you over $100 bucks easy. Having onstar will jack the price up even more. I don't know what the dash in the new bodystyle trucks looks like on the inside, but if it needs trimming or cutting on the inside, it's nothing a dremel won't fix, seriously. Just look at what you are cutting. If it isn't anything major that looks like its structural support for the dash, then chances are its perfectly fine to remove it.

I put one in my '04, and we had to cut out the back to get it to fit. That may be why they say it won't fit. Pull out your stock radio and have a look.

yeah it can't be too difficult. There's so much extra molded plastic inside of those dashboards its not even funny

It'll fit, you will have to trim out the back piece. There are two "layers" of plastic directly behind the radio. I cut one out and notched the back one for wire clearance. Take your time getting all the wiring fed into the nooks and crannies, and finding places to stash the modules. It will fit fine though, just be patient.

Thanks for all the input. I was pretty sure it would fit but it is always good to talk to someone that has installed one. My truck is an SLE2 with the trial period OnStar and XM radio. I don't care about the XM radio but will keep the OnStar. Crutchfield has all the required modules so that all the stock bells and chimes works along with OnStar. When my new truck gets here I will take a lot of pictures of the install of the AVIC-D3 and post them.

I just installed one in my NNBS 07.5 and yes I did have to trim a little of the lower left of the plastic back piece to get about 1/4" more depth on the left side. Very easy mod. The plastic is very brittle, so just take a pair of pliers and break off a piece at a time about 2" from the bottom up. Then file the edges so they do not cut the wires. Everything is very crampt behind it, so you have to stuff the adaptors up behind the plastic backing.
