: What's wrong with this secondary fuel filter design??
skoryaro2 01-24-2005, 04:32 PM Obviously having a slow day at work.......
Why hasn't someone with the know-how manufactured an aftermarket fuel filter set-up similar to these where the OEM fuel filter is removed and a ported flange is installed in it's place? The replacement flange could contain a dual filter set-up or just act as a distribution port with inlet and outlet hoses that lead to a dual filter set-up mounted elsewhere in the engine compartment. This way you wouldn't have to remove any OEM fuel lines and you could easily revert back to the OEM system by removing the accessory flange.

BTW - RED line in the crude :) drawings is fuel flow.
marcdeluca 01-24-2005, 08:06 PM Do you think the extra weight hanging out there with all the vibration would be a problem? Perhaps having an adapter screw on the existing base, with hoses going to a body or frame mounted double filter would hold up better.
skoryaro2 01-25-2005, 10:23 PM Good point - you also wouldn't be so limited on space.
Fingers 01-25-2005, 11:26 PM I'll one up you
skoryaro2 01-26-2005, 09:51 AM I like it!
Didn't Eric (DMAXALLITECH) have an extension plate for sale for the LB7 to utilize the LLY filter?? I've never seen one, but I wonder if those could be modified to adapt an inlet and outlet hose as per your diagram?
Fingers 01-26-2005, 10:22 AM Your turn. I'll man the help desk and you produce em.

LOL - Somehow I knew you were going to take that route. I had the same thought in my head reading your post ):h
Actually, I toyed with the idea, but unfortunately I'm not in the "biz" and have very few connections to be able to ever make it happen. Maybe someone here with much more knowledge will pick up on it and be able to make a few bucks!
I'm just surprised nobody has done it yet. I thought I'd get a zillion responses telling me how much of an idiot I am and why it wouldn't work ):h
Any vendors listening??
problemchild 01-26-2005, 12:29 PM Why not remote mount it where you can get to it to replace the filters.
Also if you mount filters up high you need to run a liftpump.
Filters down low (level with tank) dont need it.

Better location would be nice.
Filter height is not a factor, but height of the pump is a factor once the system is primed. That and line restriction determine how hard the pump has to suck to get fuel.
GM did a lot of work to keep the Dmax as a self contained package. Thus the filter is attached to the engine. There is no functional reason it has to be located next to the engine.
Horse Trainer 01-26-2005, 01:36 PM Someone was working on a plate to adapt a Cat to the OEM flange - haven't heard anything about it for quite some time. I believe that the threads on the OEM filter post are weird (square?), but it is not an insurmountable problem. I made up my own frame mounted system, rather than wait. An adapter from the OEM flange to a remote would be a nice way to go.

Yes, he's got a BOATLOAD of them.....:o

Diesel Power 01-27-2005, 01:54 AM I can tell you why i wouldn't make one- liability.. i was going to make an adapter to run a CAT on the OEM head for my personal truck (like a couple others have done) but haven't got around to it.
to make a sell something that alters GM's filter (be it good, bad, or ugly) is to dangerous for me to put my name on it. even if its a better design, what happens when the dealer denies warranty work beacuse the OEM filter isn't there (not that they would, but you never know). add a second one leaving everything from the OEM filter to the engine intact and its pretty safe to say you didn't mess with their OEM filtration system. great idea for sure!
Fingers 01-27-2005, 09:06 AM Well Nick, it would be an easy way to incorp your system into the fuel tract, and be removable to boot. I might make the filter adaptor up for myself for the heck of it then plug your filter setup into it.
skoryaro2 01-27-2005, 10:57 AM Nick, I agree with the warranty issues. My line of thinking was secondary filtration that was easily removable for return trips to the dealer and for a permanent install after warranty.
