: 6.2 block in 6.5 TD application
Dave12 03-05-2008, 09:59 PM Guys,
I posted this over in the 6.2 forum. I'm posting it here also in case anyone of the 6.5 gurus know the answer......
I have a 1998 6.5 TD with all the specs that are outlined in my signature. I'm dealing with a suspected cracked block...surprise, surprise.
I'm looking at a used "complete" but disassembled engine that came out of a 95 6.5 TD 3/4 ton pick up however apparenlty a new/rebuilt longblock was put into the truck sometime prior to the current owner buying it.
The seller has provided me with a block casting number of 14022660 and a possible date code of 9782 (maybe should be B782). This info tells me that is is a 6.2 block.
So....If I buy this will it work in my 98 with all of my 98 bits and pieces (injection pump, turbo, manifolds, HO waterpump, etc, etc.)?
From what I've read if this is a 6.2 block from 82 it is one of the strongest made...correct?
Thanks,
Dave
WhiteK2500 03-05-2008, 10:23 PM It'll work, you just need to run an oil supply line to the turbo.
Can't comment on block strength.
Dave12 03-05-2008, 10:25 PM It came out of a turbo application so I believe the supply line should be there.
From what I've read this is a good block, right up there with the 599.
Thanks,
Dave

Turbine Doc 03-06-2008, 09:55 AM IIRC that was one of the "transitional blocks" made when 6.2s were going away and 6.2s made then were 6.5 blocks "underbored" to 6.2 specs, that was what I was hoping for on my engine build to build a 6.2 bottom end with 6.5 top end @ 19:1, seems like Peninsular sold all 19:1 pistons in inventory, I wasn't gonna be worried with .3 liter displacement difference.
Check with Heath or Peninsular, I think that particular 6.2 can be bored to 6.5 specs, IIRC 94 & 95 6.2 block fall into this, in 96 no more 6.2s made by GM , if the needed a N/A replacement they went to 6.5 N/A in military, at least that is way I remember it.
Dave12 03-06-2008, 10:02 AM Tim,
Without knowing excatly what the specs of this block are (6.2, 6.5, 6.2 bored out, etc.) am I going to run into any problems or can it be used no matter what? It came out of 95a 6.5 TD so will there be any reason why it won't work in my 98? From what I've read it sounds like these are strong blocks.
Thanks,
Dave
WhiteK2500 03-06-2008, 10:50 AM No reason it shouldn't work if it was already used in place of a 6.5.
Just do the normal checks for, cracks, pitting, etc etc.
Where is this engine?

Um...it's in Oregon.
Turbine Doc 03-06-2008, 12:01 PM 95 6.5 as a 98 will work, I thought I had read it was a 6.2 though then it would need punching up to 6.5 specs, 6.5 to 6.5 no issues, it won't have oil spray cooling, some consider that to be a plus, I'm on the fence with that opinion, I have 2 "at risk" oil spraying engines both are running just fine.
Turbine Doc 03-06-2008, 12:05 PM Okay I'm confused I went back to 1st post, do you suspect it is a 6.2 block or not, if 6.2 bottom will have to be built as a 6.2, or punched up to 6.5 spec, if it's a 6.5 then as another 6.5 just put the 98 hardware on top of the 95 block after you go thru it.
Tracy 03-06-2008, 12:28 PM Dave try these guys "Cold Stream Truck Parts" at 250-545-0781, there in Vernon BC, they seem to cycle through 6.5's a few times a year. They are typically straight shooters. I know they have 3 blocks on a palet, but 2 are Fubared for sure and the 3rd ?. Also try GRS salvage 250-546-9101, one of the owners (Larry was his name I think) had a complete 6.5 on a pallet, over a year ago with very few km's, he was keeping it for his own truck but maybe he's had a change of plans.
I have thought a few time's what I would do if my 6.5 gives up in the big way. Think I would go with Kennedy or his supplier Reviva if I could find a local supplier for resonable price.
Heath has told me that the 6.2's make the best blocks other than the GEP block of course.
