well guys as we speak my truck is getting her tranny rebuild, also having a heavy duty tc installed.

im thinking now that i will have a trans that wont slip in 2nd,3rd, and 4th, im thinking about doing some performance mods. and i have a few questions.

how much will a cold air intake really help?
are tuners worth the money?
what else would you reccomend?

thanks guys!

A Custom tune beats a Hand held Hands down...and cost about 1/2 of a hand held. Buying your own tuning software is the best, But Costly, and takes time to learn. So Back to a custom tune, well worth the money and you'll probably get 15 different vendor suggestions as soon as I hit the enter button. I Use Zippy Performance, I Have had a W4M, I Have had a Diablosport, and I Couldn't be Happier, Zippy is the man in My Opinion. I wanted some specific things in my tune, Like when my T/C locks and unlocks. I Have a Air/fuel meter so I Keep a close eye on mine, and his tune is exactly as I wanted. I Know there are other great tuners out there, and I can't comment on theirs, But I Know Zippys price is 1/2 of some of the Very Popular tuners in TX. also I think if your doing a mail order or custom tune you need a A/F Ratio gauge, It's one field that NEEDS to be Correct All the time....

I agree with this verry much. I have HP Tunners and have done a few vehicles with alot of succes, but I would not recomend it to someone that is not knowledgible in the workings the internal combustion engine or someone that is easily intimidated. What I would recomend to you is a cam kit with springs & pushrods. It will give you a solid gain of up to 50rwhp depending on how wild the cam is. LSX Engines really respond well to a cam. Comp Cams makes LSX truck cams. Also go with a set of Pacesetter full length headers, and a flow through exhaust. Chevy High Tech did an article a while back and they gained around 75-100fwhp with a proper custom tune. All of this and you would have about $2,000 in the truck and if you dicided to go bigger( ie. heads or supercharger or turbo) you would already have the supporting mods in place. If you don't want to go with the cam at least go with the tune and headers and pick up 40-45fwhp with a tune.

CAI's look good and some people think they sound good, but that's about it with them.
I got my custom tune from Black Bear Performance and am extremely satisfied. The best 200.00 I've spent.
