I have on 02 duramax and I have noticed when I am sitting at a stop light or a stop sign my engine will surge. It does not do it all the time and only if I am in drive or reverse. What is the cause of this and how do I fix it? I have read in some of the past threads that it could be some sort of sensor? What is the part and how do I fix it?

My '02 did that while under warranty. Fuel pressure regulator was bad. Must have been a fairly big job as lots of stuff had to come off the top of the motor. Only problem I had till the pump rub @ 89K. Good luck as labor may be high. :(

X2 on the FPR. Mine did the same thing. It is very common. It is not hard to do, just time consuming. It is in the engine valley at the front of the engine. I think the part alone is like $400 or so. Been awhile since I did mine.

before you go through the time and money to replace it try dumping in some 2 cycle oil and some additive. it has helped in some cases

what he said ^^^... worked for me. quieted the idle down, made the surging stop.

i started running marvels mystery oil and diesel kleen, 8oz at every fill-up, and when i went through 32oz of them, the surging has stoped, but the rough/loud idle is still there, so i stoped. plus i didnt really feel any difference when i used it. i got turned on to it from a buddie with a 24-valve, who got turned on to it from a guy he works with who has a fast, built 24-valve. both say thier trucks run better with it.

mine has a 50 rpm surge most of the time, but sometimes its not there...do you guys think adding 2 cycle oil will help? I have never put 2 cycle oil in the truck...i assume you mean putting a little in the fuel tank? If so, what brand of oil and how much?

just a general 2 stroke oil add anywhere in 1 to 2/3 oz for every gallon i would say

I had my fuel injectors replace by the dealer and still the idle surges. 85000 miles on her. Someone had told me they had replaced the fuel rail sensor and that had fixed it. does anyone have any experience with the rail sensor??

sounds like a weak fpr valve guys. they tend to lope when it starts goin bad. 2 stroke in the tank will help it, but not fix it. thats what i do when it starts soundin like a top fueler....

Might try cleaning the mass air flow sensor with electrical cleaner. This cleared up a minor lope with mine. Be careful it also co$t $400 from the dealer.

X2 Had my FPRV replaced at the dealer about 2 weeks ago...no more lope now.
