: I want a Diesel Blazer... Am I stupid?
GrandInfundibulum 01-24-2005, 02:29 AM Hey all,
I am in the need of a good 4x4 and I love the K Blazers. I live in California and, unfortunately, I have to deal with emissions testing. In order to get around this, I have been considering purchasing a blazer with a diesel power plant. Besides not having to emissions test it, I have also been telling myself that the diesels are more efficient and have a greater lifespan (feel free to set me straight on this). Specifically, I have been looking for a 94 Blazer with the 6.5TD in it rather than the older blazers with the 6.2. I don't do a lot of hauling, but I do have to go up and down mountain roads. What do you guys think? Is the 6.5 pretty solid or should I stick with the 82-92 blazers with the 6.2? plain old 350?
veggiesuburban 01-24-2005, 08:06 AM Go for the 6.5 TD. IMO try and find a 94' with the electronic controls, remount mount the PMD (check FAQ post) and you'll be all set. Once you've settled into your new truck convert it to run on waste vegetable oil and enjoy free fuel!!
Any vehicle is what you make it! I love my diesel Tahoe and if I crashed it I would replace it with the exact same thing. There are plenty of 6.2 diesel Blazer's on the road which is a testament to their quality since none have been made in 13 years. I have found that 350 gas motors produced before 1995 are way to under powered for my needs.
lupey6.5 01-24-2005, 11:11 AM you can se for my signature that i have a '94 and i love it. the only drive train design problem i've found is the wimpy 10 bolt rear but it swaps out easily to a 14 bolt semi floater that still has the 6 lug axles. these should be pretty easy to come by in cali.
blakerj10 01-24-2005, 11:12 AM I have a 94 Blazer with the 6.5. I absolutely love it. I have had to 350 powered vehicles of the same vintage and would take the 6.5 hands down. I live in the Black Hill of SD and the 6.5 has great power for the hills. It never shifts the tranny all over the place like a gasser and gets much better milage. I don't tow a lot, but it pulls my small enclosed dirt bike trailer like nothing. Get the 6.5!
bowtie 01-24-2005, 02:27 PM NOPE You ain't Stupid for wanting that combo in a Blazer. Thats what I would be buying if I was looking for a Blazer.
GrandInfundibulum 01-24-2005, 04:16 PM Now I am finding that half the trick of getting one of these trucks is finding them. I did a nation wide search on auto trader, collector cart trader and truck trader to only find one in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com /><FONT face=Ogden, UT 590 miles from me and one in Penn Hills, PA 2140 miles from me :( and patience is a virtue that I don't have time for

There is a 1995 6.5 blazer and a 1996 6.5 Surburban here in Reno at the same car lot. Looking at the local Auto Trader paper, there are quite a few 6.5 SUV's here. Nevada now has diesel smog testing and I hear we got the idea from California so just be aware. If you need the specific dealers, PM me.
Texas Diesel Guy 01-24-2005, 06:02 PM I have a '94 Blazer, I got it when a guy called the shop asking about what to do to get it running so he could sell it. I told him I would come help him get it running so long as he promised not to sell it to anyone else! This is my second diesel blazer, my old '90 was probably the solidest truck I've ever owned, I specificly wanted a Diesel, Full-Size, 4wd SUV, and that means only this or a suburban or Excursion, which is way too much vehicle for what I need.
quantum mechanic 01-24-2005, 09:59 PM I'd say most are in Texas. I pass a dozen everytime I drive to the city
Today I saw a Z71 1500 stepside, and a few 2500 worktrucks and 3500 dulleys and SRW
I assume they are 6.5L with the bumper holes but I've seen a tahoe that had the bumper and was a gasser.
Texas Diesel Guy 01-24-2005, 10:02 PM I thought so to, but you'd be surprised how many are on the Canadian side too.

Thanks for the info, but I am going to wait 'till one becomes available a little closer than that. Currently, diesel is smog testing exempt... I hope that doesn't change

OK NOW Whats wrong with eBay ??
steiner43511 01-25-2005, 08:42 PM yeah what is all the ebay bashin all about?
In the late 90's Tahoe's that were not diesels with holes in the bumpers were 4 door Z71's, the easy way to tell is that the bumpers are also body paint matched. All Tahoe's from the factory with the 6.5 diesel are two door 4X4's. All 1/2 ton suburban's with the 6.5 are 2 wheel drive.
CharlieP. 01-25-2005, 11:19 PM These are rare but with a little fine tuning very QUICK too. I love mine and this Sat. morning I'll finally know what it's putting down to the pavement.
