after running out of fuel or changing the fuel filter, how do you prime the system? is there a pressure releif valve like a schrader valve on the fuel rail or something like that you release the air from the lines? what do you fill the filter with for priming? somebody told me wd40, but i do not know about all of that..

please advise.

:confused::confused::confused:

I always fill my fuel filter up with fuel before putting it back on, also, there is a push pump on top of the fuel filter housing that you can use to prime your system after you change it. Hope this helps!

On the top of the fuel filter unit, there is a round priming pump "button".
Next to it is a black plastic (if stock) threaded plug. This will have a
screwdriver slot. Remove the plug, ( or just loosten it) and push on the
priming pump, while watching for fuel. Push it all the way down, and let the
button return all the way up, It may take a bit of pumping if you ran out of fuel.
When you get fuel, tighten the plug, and pump until the button is hard to push.
It should start.
This process will fil up the filter, and remove most of the air from the system.
WD40 is not required.

Wear safety glasses, and watch out for fuel that you will be releasing at the
fitting. Don't strip the plastic fitting! have fun.................

Do not fill the filter with anything. Anything you fill with will not be filtered. I find it better to remove the bleed screw. You will see air bubbles after approximately 50 strokes of the pump then a little fuel. Slowly give it another few strokes as needed to get all the air out. Later! Frank

Fill new filter.
Run it till it stops.
Prime with vent open.
Prime with vent closed.
Start truck.

I agree with Frank, I don't like to prefill my filter because of filling the clean side with unfilltered fuel. The first time I changed my filter, I primed it just like the book said but I had some trouble getting it to start right away (took several cranks). Since then as I am doing other maintenace at the same time I have primed the filter, then let it sit for 15 min. or so well I do something else. I then prime again and have had no starting issues at all.....works for me

I don't know how you guys prefill your filter's but if you fill them slowly on the outside of the center hole you will be filling it on the dirty side and the fuel will get filtered as it pass's to the center.
Remember the fuel pass's from the outside of the filter to the inside. So just make sure you don't get any down the center tube and you will be fine.
I always prefill my filter's including the Nictane and I never have to prime or bleed anything, start's right up and never miss's a beat.

I don't prefill mine because I am likely to spill it, trying to get into the tight area.

one of the delightful features of having installed one of John Kennedy's lift pumps is to prime either the OEM or Mega fuel filter, all I have to do is open the vent screw on the filter and push a button ... the pump will fill either in a matter of a few seconds :ro)

Just one little word of caution......from my mistake.

Be careful you don't loosen the bleed screw too much, I did and when I pumped the primer the bleed screw went flying off into the night........took me an hour on my hands and knees with a flashlight to find it and I was very lucky to find it believe me. Thought I had just won the lottery.

If you are on the side of the road at night it will be the next morning before you can get a replacement unless you can find something to fit the threads and block off the bleeder hole.

I rank this right up there with the tranny filter magnet in the trash with the old filter except without the bleed screw or plug you are not going anywhere.. LOL

For the above reason I bought two aftermarket steel bleeder screws.

Factory screw is in the box, in a tool box.
