Does any one know any thing about how to put on a remote start for an 02 24V, and if so what kind should I get?

Hey buddy looking for a remote starter.I'ts a good investment for summer or winter time.I'm using that product for over 15 yrs now,c'ant live without one.In my 04 cummins auto trans,i have a autostart model AS-1725 SH works good there's lot of good features.Like here in Canada it's really cold, and you can program it to run 20 min every 2 hrs, that's good when you are at a hotel and it's 40 below and no plug in for the block heater. When you start it with the remote it takes 40 sec to start,to let time to the manifold heater to warm up, and the engine run for 20 min and shut off. If you go somewhere and you want to live it running press the button on the remote remove the key from the ignition and lock the door and it will run for 20 minute. Regular price on those install was $800.00 and got it for $500.00 and you have door lock on the same remote d'ont need to carry 2 remote :ro) Steeve

I called a local place here in Indiana and got a qoute for my truck and it was going to be around $300 installed. If you are good at wiring, they are not all that hard to put on yourself, just very time consuming. I have put two on my other vehicles but they are not diesel. The brand quoted was Python but the other brand I installed myself was a Bulldog.

Thank you both so much for the reply. I was not sure if any one new anything about them. I have heard that some of them connect to the "wait to start light" so it knows when to key up the starter. Have you heard anything about that?

The guy that I talked to said the python starters had a built in time delay on them. He said you can set them to whatever delay they offer and that should take care of the delay before you can start your truck. He didn't say however what time settings those were.

I think I already know the answer but I have to ask. The don't offer that for a six speed stick do they? Seems they could put a neutral senser on it for safety and everything else the same.

None of the starters that I have ever read about can be used with a manual trans or a non fuel injected vehicle. You would probably never get a business to install one on a manual trans but you can do it yourself. I installed one on my car which has a manual trans. I just took a dowl rod and cut it to a length that would hold the clutch down by putting the other end against the bracket on the drivers seat. It works fine, probably not the safest but it works. I always make sure to set the parking brake and I don't leave it in a gear. If by some chance the rod came off the clutch it is going to kill the car anyway. I have had it on for two years now and haven't had any problems.

Actually, almost every company now makes remote starts for manual transmissions AND diesels.

The manual transmission works as follows: As you are going to leave the truck you put it in neutral, release the clutch and push the parking brake. Then you press a button on the transmitter or in some cases push the park brake twice. Then you shut the key off and truck will continue to run. You get out of the truck and when all the doors are close the truck will shut itself off. If a door is not opened the truck will start the next time you press the remote starter. If a door is opened before you try to start it, it will not start.

This is not 100% foolproof but it does work and it requires a little common sense. Obviously you can't leave pets or kids in the car. You can also not leave the window rolled down or someone could reach in and put it in gear.

The system works very well and I recommend it for people with manual transmissions. It hasn't failed anyone that I know yet. Astro start has about the nicest manual transmission interface i have seen so far. It is compatible with any of their models. www.astroflex.com

As for using a remote start on a diesel, make sure you get one that monitors the wait to start light instead of a timed delay.

Galaxie428, your system is very hard on the clutch release bearings. I think you should reconsider.

Max Power,

Why do you think this would be hard on the clutch? Is it from keeping the clutch engaged for long periods of time? I don't know all that much about vehicles. Please explain. Thanks
