I have read in the past post of owners running out of fuel....with still showing fuel on board.
My fuel light had just come on, and showed 30miles to empty. Stoped to fix my cell phone, went out to start her up.....out of fuel. :o
I said...."that will never happen to me!"

Same thing happened to my neighbor on his 04 Chevy. He has the LB7, he said it showed 35 miles on his DIC and it was just 12 miles to the place were he usually fills up. I did learn how to prime a Duramax, sure glad it wasn't on mt own. I have came close but not yet.

Last week I was thinking about this as I filled my tank. I had gotten it as low as it had ever been since I owned my truck. Showed 25 miles to empty on dic, still no light. I filled up and put in 25.5 gals. My normal rule of thumb is to fill when I get no lower than 1/4. Last week was very busy, and I didn't have the time to fill as normal. From now on, I make the time.

We were hauling ass with our empy trailer on the way back from the trailer factory for repairs. Daughter was having difficulty breathing due to swollen tonsils so we hoped we could get leeway from cops so 80-90 in 75. Wasn't worth ambulance from her but needed to get home.
We were coming up on the fuel station, exit was in sight so about a mile. DIC read 19 left and the sputtering started. Sh#t! We rolled to the bottom of the exit and I toted 5 Gal to the truck and had loads of fun priming. Don't do it!!!!
What scared us is traveling through NM, we though the stretch on HW 666 out of shiprock had fuel stations. Scared sh#tless, we pulled into the first station in probably 150 miles reading 19. Damn were we lucky!

Are the fuel computers worthless in these trucks? I have had my truck over a week now and ran out of fuel with 44 miles showing on the range and the truck stop in sight. The ford I traded in, my wife had as low as 9 miles to go and with the amount she put in, it could have gone another 30 miles when it said 9 left.

Why do you guys go to the edge fuel wise? When you get down to half tank or so, fill up. Doesn't cost any more. Save yourself the aggrivation.

I'll bit at that one. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

When I travel from Surrey BC Canada to Sun peaks, a ski resort, I fill the truck about 30 minutes from home. A full tank plus 5 gallons from a container will take me to the mountain and back to the same gas station. I usually have about 1/16 showing on the fuel gauge (BTW I am referring to my 97 gasser my D/A hasn't made the trip yet) Why? Because the price of fuel is a big difference.

On another note, last year I drove 25 000 Km through Mexico, Canada and the USA. There were lots and lots of times we were looking for gas stations. Not because we wanted to but because we didn't know enough about the area, or the hills that burned up the gas.

However, in my everyday driving I never let the tank go much below 1/4 before I fill it up. I gather that driving the tank empty or close to it isn't very good fro these D/As.

I think we all wish we could have 200 gallons of fuel on board.

The emptier the tank the more condesation and water problems. 5 min to fill up is a small price to pay.

I've had mine where it said 8 miles left before I filled. I always fill all the way up the neck. Generally I never let it get that low though, easier to just fill at 1/4 tank and not worry so much. I mostly watch the miles. Put a programmer on it and the mpg and miles left displays will be wrong anyway.
Also there's another advantage to having a 1000 gallon tank in your yard, you don't have to go out of your way to get fuel. Except on the road..

A mechanic told me one time that the secret to these electric in tank fuel pumps is to keep 1/4 tank or better. Having that much fuel in there keeps the pump bathed in fuel and therefore keeps it cool. Running it down too low lets it heat up and wear out quicker. I always took his advise since an in tank pump is an expensive pain in the $#$@# to change.

I think we all wish we could have 200 gallons of fuel on board. Don't know about you but it would not matter how much fuel is on board I would try and test the limit:D
