When I was installing my audio system, I wanted to build a center console to house the amps. I looked for salvage seats so i could take the 40 side of a 60/40 and try to carve it to reflect my existing 40 on the right. My impatience took over and I decided to cut my own seat and make it happen. After taking off the covers and foam, I went to work with a cutoff wheel and welder. I moved the legs and hinges over to produce a seat that is functionally identical and opposite of the factory 40. I had to add some foam to the side bolster and had an upholstery shop recover the end of the seat. Minor seat belt mounting point modification and I was done. Everyone asks how I got individual rear seats. Hope you like it

When I take some more pictures I will post them and show you how the amps are in the console. The amps are sitting underneath plexiglass windows in the console and lit up with LED lights

How long did it take to change the seat to a 40

jbs1122
03-04-2008, 07:15 PM
It took about 20 minutes to get the seat out and cover/foam off, 2 hours of cutting and welding, then time at the shop to get recovered. Its an easy one day job if anyone is attempting this. I took measurements off of the 40 and cut the 60 kinda like sectioning a frame of a car and took material out of the middle, that way the hinge and support works the same and the seat is still safe

The console looks sweet at night! Did you have the same color of leather on the console, looks different. You should have added arm rests on the inside part.

If you dont mind me asking, what kind $$$$ did the project run you not including the amps just the seats?

06Dmaxpwr

I did the same thing with my old 02, the only thing I did different is I had the arm rests come up and then had floorspace left. I did most of it on a CNC and then had one sub fire from the top and then 1 forward with the amp on an angle since it was a 1000 watter. It was very simple to make and took about 25 bucks to make not including the JL components, subs and amps. I will say it looks killer though.

I made it sweep from the headrest area and come down so it would contour the seats....Of course you always need neons so i put some blue lights backing up the JL logos that I had cut out on the CNC and it made a nice touch. Cut some more JL logos out of steel and placed them on the visors also

The reason I didnt put armrests in were because i think it would've complicated the build and taken much more time. The Vinyl covering the console is slightly different color but an unnoticeable difference in most light. The vinyl matches the stuff covering the box in the bed and it is durable uv/water/oil resistant marine grade and has held up great so far even with throwing stuff in the bed against the box.

The top piece if 1/8 thick ABS plastic that I heated and bend around a jig then covered with the vinyl. The only thing holding that piece in is pressure from the sides

Here's my question...would the front seat buckets fit/work in the back seat. I know the mounting holes would be different, but if you drilled the holes to mount them would they be about the same size as the existing 40/60 seat that is there now or would they be too big? I guess it's just a matter of measuring, but I am sure that someone has thought about this just like me.

i believe the height of the brackets are gonne be different soa little cutting and welding would have to be done.

jbs1122
03-11-2008, 02:04 PM
Yeah I was first considering finding some true buckets from the front of a truck and putting them in the back along with the wiring to make my rear seats power adjustable but they were going to be too large without some cutting and modification to the bracket and that was going to complicate the power functions. After deciding I was willing to weld new brackets and freeze the seats (get rid of the wiring) I decided that I was just as well off to modify my existing seat but if you can get your hands on some buckets for a reasonable price go for it! Too bad GM never offered a factory bucket option and console in trucks like some super dutys but I guess its our job to create our own.

1lowdiesel,

Your dash and console and rear buckets looks awesome!!!

I'm looking to install one of the newest larger din radios in my 2002 dash, and I think I might have to do a custom dash just to mount like an Alpine IVA-W505 or similar, I'm thinking about doing Dyna-Mat all around, then a sub box in the back to house 2 JL-Audio subs, and can't decide which speakers to install in the doors, maybe Focal, or Boston Acoustics, with some pods. Your idea of a 12" touch screen is way cool!!

Just wondering what you would recommend, thanks.

09-15-2008, 09:26 AM
thanks man. i've seen people use the newer dash bezel w/ the double din and just modify it a bit. there are some pics on gmfullsize of people that did it. focal speakers are really nice for the doors. i'd do some 10's either under or behind the seats, imo they sound much clearer than 12's.
