I have a 04 2500HD dmax at 7700 miles it felt like the truck had 4 wheel steering when only turning right. Then I was told the truck was dogtracking to the right ( rear further to the right than the front). Took truck to have alignment checked and their was nothing out of specs. ( 4wheel trust alignment at that) The alignment tech said it was impossilble until he followed the truck down the street and saw it for himself. The dealer nor GM want to acknoledge this problem but have attempted to repair it 9 times in less than a year. The rear tires leave a rubber dust on rear bed side and it will drive real squirrly when it does this, that the bad part of this problem it does it mostley after I've been driving for a while and now it feels like the drive line is binding up and vibrating. The dealer has replaced leafsprings, leafspring bushings, rear shackles, rear end clutches, and said they replaced the carrier but they also said they had to pull it out of a truck they had in stock since they ordred the wrong parts for my truck. I do a lot of towing with this truck and cover a lot of miles ( 79000 in 10 months ) I pull a 21ft car trailer about 95% of the time and service the truck a lot more than GM's recommendations (oil=5000, trans=15000(spin on trans=10000), rearend=15000 (lately every 5000) rotate tires=5000) Need other opinons.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

jtlawdog 01-23-2005, 10:02 PM Here is what you need to do right away.1st contact the Department of Transportation and file a lemmon law complaint directly with the DOT, the dealership cannot, nor will not help you do this. Next you need to contact the Atty. general office in the state you live in, and file a complaint against the dealership, and general motors . The dealership must obtain and keep a current liscence with the state. If you feel the dealership is trying to blow you off or ignore you this will light a fire under their butt.Have had to do this several times for clients. If all goes well you should be behind the wheel of your new truck within a few weeks.
TheBac 01-23-2005, 10:49 PM OR...have someone follow you with a camcorder. Pictures are worth a 1000 words....
Am I reading that correct that you noticed the problem at 7700 miles, but you now have 79000 miles? And you've been towing with this even though it drives like this?
Could it be a bad tire or two, maybe separated belts?
PM Max Payne, DmaxalliTech or GMCSID..they are GM techs. Maybe they can help.
Tom
mac1234 01-24-2005, 12:47 AM The only thing I can think of is the rear axel is not square with the chassis rails.
That or the chassis rails are not square. This would cause it to dog track. Take a tape measure and measure the distance from the front wheel to the rear wheel on each side. If their off more than a 1/4" I'd take it to a frame shop. They will fix it, but you'll be paying the bills. Ask the dealer if they would pay the bill. Tell them it's that or you want a new truck.
akdiesel 01-24-2005, 07:19 AM If the frame needs adjustment I would not keep the truck.
Maybe the rear axle needs the mounting brackets readjusted or possibly just a new one alxe. This would be the better way to go if that is the problem.
I does sound like the dealer is trying to work with you, but like jtlawdog suggested, I would get the ball rolling. Get the paperwork in order so that this does not inconveniance you any more.
Good luck
trockuga8 01-25-2005, 10:22 PM To answer the question, Die hard GM and bought this truck to work with not work and Ive been through all the steps thru the owners manual for service issues and complaints but GM says sorry the Area GM Service rep. said put new bushing in springs and now after all the other repais they look at me like an idiot I guess I am going in to the dealer 1-26-05 to let replace the steering saft (under warranty @ 80000 miles now GO FIGURE) Measurments are same truck Xs oput on frame rack and alingmets specs great. Now remember this problem does not happen all the time, mainly after the rear diff. has about 5000 to 7500 after service it seems to get wose, change the diff fluid and it better for a short while. The dealer has been in the rear diff other well trained techs have looked at @#@# even a FORD (thats a bad four letter word in this house) certified master tech has looked and said carrier but after it was replaced is went from great back to bad. I opoinon and request to GM unbolt the four leaf sring bolts and shock bolts brake lines and just replace it all but even the dealer techs say they cant duplicate but yet preform a repair attempt. Put 700 miles on it from 1-24 am to 1-25 am then a nother 300 1-25 am to pm if the wheels arent rollin Im not makin moma any spendin money, I bet yall now what that causes, I'll look into the other options but got to hit the road again in the am ATL TO Macon & back Then to nashville and back Ben keeps calling. OH thats after the dealer repair the steering shaft vibration>
Thanks so far

CB_Rocket 01-25-2005, 11:44 PM jesus doesnt your butt get sore???!!!
akdiesel 01-26-2005, 12:13 AM Maybe this is connected to you equipment that you tow. You say it is fine at first but after a couple thousand miles it gets bad again. Are you sure the trailer is not making the truck track differently? With that much wieght it may make the truck act funny.
Ape0r 01-26-2005, 12:13 AM The way I see it, here is where you are:
Alignment is within specification. Here is something to try. Find a really, really long, steep hill, and put 'er in neutral. It could be that there is something wrong with a bearing or something along those lines in one side of the axle, and thus one wheel is pushing harder than the other -> pushing you to the right. Maybe if you are in neutral it will track straight? Just something to try. Another thought would be to put the rear up on jackstands and make a mark on each tire, even with the mark on the other tire, and put her in gear for a minute or two.
Assuming there is no loss to the TC and the engine idles at 500 rpm, the rear wheels should turn ~40-45 times/minute. That is slow enough that you oughta be able to tell if they are turning at different speeds. If they are, then at least you know the problem is in your axle/wheel hubs, and can advise the dealer on it.
Micheal Tomac 01-26-2005, 12:44 AM Do the symptoms follow parking brake use? Maybe one is hanging up???
BROKER 01-26-2005, 08:17 AM Truck ever been hit ? Bumper pull trailer ? Does this happen with out the trailer ? Trailer been checked for alignment? Tires been changed on trailer?
It's a long shot but our frames are three pieces welded together. Maybe it didn't get put together just right. May need to go on a frame rack to take precise measurements.
CrazyDaze 01-26-2005, 06:12 PM I wonder if they had the same problem building this truck as they did when we built the one below in November!

trockuga8 02-02-2005, 06:33 AM trucks never been hit body shops have been top to bottow other than frame rack. but it gets better every diff serv. for about 5000 to 7000. miles, and last time noticed that the rear end dope smelt like that old nasty reg dope, getting hot? Truck does this with or with out trailer when its at its worst but mostly with since the trailer hardly ever gets un hooked but the most weight its pulled has been about 7500 AND YES IT DOES GET SORE!!!!!!!!
