There is a whole procedure to disarming the airbag(or SIR) as it's called. From what I found reading when I did my cruise convert the bag can hold a charge of up to 10 mins after batts disconnected. Seemed to be general consensus that 30 mins is safe. Then IIRC you are supposed to unplug the yellow connector at bottom of steering column(IT's obvious) It has a seal on it. Then I think your good to go but i would really recommend reading a service manual as I am reciting this from Memory.

don't even bother, just pull the air bag fuse, and pull the bag out, been doing this a long time, and have never disconnected a battery to service an air bag

disconnect both batts and tape off the connectors with electrical tape when welding.

Pulling the fuse is not enough. It specifically says in the book that it can hold a charge for ten+ minutes. disconnect the batteries and wait a minimum of 1/2 hour. I would scan the manual but my scanner is having issues.

After I bought my truck I found this black box hanging from the wires up in front of the front tire. It had rust off the frame a long time ago the way it looked. I didn't realize what it was until I unplugged it and the air bag light came on. So much for procedure.:p:
Body shops weld on all types of vehicles without giving any of that a thought. there are actually all kinds of different electrical charges running around in a vehicle all the time. Allot of internal engine parts come into the machine shop with a sup prizing amount of magnetization from the friction.

you dont have to do anything special to unplug the sensor. Just unplug it if you need to move it. It wont blow the airbag. I work at a body shop and we unplug airbags on all kinds of cars, never had any problems.

also, we weld on cars all the time and never unhook any electrical. Never had a problem.

I have the GM Factory manual and it says to allow 10 mins time after disconnecting power. I do a half hour to be extra safe. I don't care what anyone else thinks, that's what the book says. Proceed at your own risk. People fill there cars up at gas stations every day but once in a blue moon someone gets badly burned from an explosion due to static discharge. Safety procedures are created for a reason. People who ignore them sooner or later get hurt or worse hurt someone else.JMO

i don't mean to be a bother, but like i said, i have been doing this a long time, and have never disconnected a battery to do any airbag on any car or truck, import or domestic. i work in a flat rate world, and if you spend time waiting for stuff like that, a simple job turns into an all day affair, and you loose your shirt, and your paycheque. just my 2 cents

Yea just unplug the fuse pretty simple. I do it when kids want to ride in the front seat.
