: Rotella Synthetic or Mobil Delvac??
TnfarmerLLY 03-04-2008, 01:33 AM goin to change my oil soon, 1st time since i've owned truck, i bought it with 45K on it, and the oil had always been changed at the dealer, so now should i use Rotella T synthetic 5w40 or Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40 ??? the Mobil is $8.60 gal here and Rotella synthetic is $16.30 gal....which u think is best to use, is the rotella worth double the price????
SeaRayOwner 03-04-2008, 02:25 AM Your comparing a mineral oil (Delvac 1300) to a synthetic (Rotella) so it may not be a level playing field. I believe I have read that the Rotella synthetic is a group III vs. a group IV syntheitc. I personally like Mobil Delvac 1 ESP (full group IV syntheitc) 5w-40. I do not have any experience with the 2 oils you mention. Best of luck.
dnewton3 03-04-2008, 05:33 AM Being in TN you'll rarely see really cold weather (I know it snows, but it rarely gets much below 20 deg on a routine basis, right?). GM shows 15w-40 good to zero degrees, IIRC. You'll likely never see it that cold; a 15w-40 would be just fine. There's nothing wrong with the RTS (that's what I run), but I'm a lot further north than you, so my temps can often dip below zero. I'd use 15w-40 year round if I lived in your area or further south.
With that in mind, I would think that saving the money and using the Mobil Delvac 1300 is the way to go. It's a very fine fluid, and that's a good price. The Delvac often shows excellent performance in wear metals, oxidation control, and viscosity retention in UOA's. I'd use this with great confidence.
There are other good brands of "dino" oil as well, but this is the one you stated, so I kept my comments to those.
golddigger 03-04-2008, 12:26 PM I've had good luck running the mobile 1 15w-50 full synthetic.

You sure about that viscosity? The Mobil 1 HDEO syn (Delvac 1 or Turbo Diesel Truck) is 5W-40, and the Delvac 1300 dino is 15W-40. The 15W-50 is for gas burners, as referenced by the API donut on the back of the oil bottle.

x2
If you ARE running the 15w50, you might want to change that out pretty quick... Its a good oil (I run it in my high revving turbo gasser), but it is NOT diesel oil

X3. 15w50 is what I run in my Subaru turbo buggy (gasser). I'd be changin' that out if I were you.
enahs 03-04-2008, 02:05 PM Mobil 1 Delvac 5W-40 is the full synthetic for diesel with CI-4 rating. And you won't get it for that price — more like $7-$8 a quart. Check this supporting vendor http://www.avlube.com/automotive.html. If you want a CJ-4 rating, go to the Mobil 1 Delvac ESP 5W-40. enahs 03-05-2008, 12:41 AM Do an Internet search in your area for a Mobil supplier — they will either sell to you or tell you who carries it. Or buy from the supporting vendor above. Here's the link from the Mobil site for distributors in TN http://www.host.exxonmobil.com/channelpartners/ns_distributor_directory_state.jsp?distributorStat e=tn
jpringle3 03-05-2008, 12:58 AM I read the Mobil-one site and it does not say CJ it says CI-plus I use 15/40 Rotella it's CJ. I have one more change in the pail and it doesn't burn any or use any so that will get me till fall hopefully CJ synthetic will be out by them and not Royal Purple. PLAY SAFE!

Mobil Delvac 1300 15W-40 is the CJ-4 diesel oil GM chooses to offer to their dealer network.
If you want to find the CJ-4 Mobil Delvac 1 product in person, I know TA truck stops stock it in their shop counter area. Others have said they have found it at farm and fleets.
