Just doing some thinkin how to prep the block for some durability, and I couldn't figure out if splaying the caps would add life by itself or would adding a girdle help any, either with or with out splay caps. Am I going overboard?

Overboard? Depends on what you want out of the engine....going all out or just a daily driver?

Well I only drive 3.2 miles to work now (sweet) so it'll be a dd, but I'll be pulling some weight every so often - bobcat, other trucks, cars and the like. I don't want to nuke a engine over a cheap part that I could've/should've put in.

This is just a suggestion. If it's just occasional pulling the stud girdle would probably be enough and cheaper and easier. Leo

You put new aftermarket main caps on. The machine shop has to drill and tap the outer two main bolts (the short ones) at a angle into the thicker part of the main block web. then it needs either line bord or honed depending on how far off the new caps are.$$$$$ I'm interested in this also as im trying to make up my mind. I'm leaning to the girdle I think.

Pics coming soon on mine with splays, nearing end of the build,

girdle kits you see for sale ain't doing much but draining wallet

TD I have seen girdle kits that go on just outside bolts, is there any that ties all 4 together? What brand of mains did you go with?

Chevy Diesel Guy, no hi-jack worries with me (no offense).

My ex bro-in-law has a reputable machine shop in the area and I still get some deals from him, so I'd have him do the machine work for me. Just guessing, but I bet I could get splays fairly cheap too!

He's got a place in Chicago where I could have the comb. chamber area of the head ceramic coated at a good price as well.
