: Flywheel rattle
Str8 Eight 01-23-2005, 12:53 AM I have an 02 with the zf6. I just started to notice a slight rattling in the flywheel area, when in neural, however it is very minimal. I can't even hear it with the interior fan on low. I don't know if this might be the start of flywheel problems, normal vibrations, or if I am just being paranoid due to the other problems that I have read about on this forum.
J-HEFF 01-23-2005, 08:08 PM My 02 duramax started doing the same thing, and it finally escalated into every time I push the clutch in it would rattle pretty good. I just took it to gm and they fixed it under warranty and everything has been fine for about 20,000 miles now, and talking to some other guys with six speeds who had the same thing done theirs are working fine also. You might run down to gm and ask them, hopefully you still have some warranty???? Not sure how much you drive:)
Good luck and have a good one!

Str8 Eight 01-23-2005, 10:12 PM Thanks for the info. Right now I only have about 10,000 miles on my 02 and this should be covered under the powertrain warranty. I guess that I might just leave it alone for awhile. By the way J-HEFF, do you have any performance mods on your truck.
J-HEFF 01-24-2005, 12:27 AM As of right now the only performance mod I have is a free-flowing muffler on my stock pipe. My sig says i'm straight piped, but that changed about three days ago, i got tired of not being able to hear people in the cab!):h Other than that, nothing yet. I'm trying to find a performance upgrade that is safe and reliable. I know lots of people love the edge, and i've driven quite a few rigs like mine with it, but the egt's worry me, I know they're not overly high, but I wan't my truck to stay as cool as possible. But I don't know, maybe a six gun or a hypertech would be my choice. If you find something you like let me know!:)

1BADDMAX 01-24-2005, 09:05 AM I always shut my truck down with the clutch depressed and in gear. I get no noise this way. If I shut the truck off with the tranny in neutral and the clutch pedal out, that damn flywheel rattles like crazy. Nearly 96k on the flywheel and clutch with no problems, other than a new clutch pedal at 30k due to squeek.

J-HEFFI have recently purchased the predator programmer. I have driven it a little on the 40hp setting and was very impressed because I only wanted a little power increase and that more than took care of it. The diagnostic tools are awesome also. If you want more info call John at DPS( a supporting vendor) he was very informative. Good luck.
Crawler Hauler 01-26-2005, 11:16 AM Don't wait too long. Mine has been doing it for a while and keeps getting worse. The dealer got in the new flyheel but there is a national backorder on the special "redesigned" bolts. I've been waiting 3 weeks.
J-HEFF 01-27-2005, 01:12 AM Str8 eight-
Thanks for the heads up on your predator, I'll have to do some investigating on it!
Have a good one!

coalbucket1 01-31-2005, 06:06 PM cruising around with programming at the highest. EGT's run upward of 200* cooler than stock. Timing map change I would suppose. With fuel delivery problem I put 395 hp and 738 ft lbs. down. With 5" and stock downpipe temps very seldom get above 1325* loaded and up hill.

Condition
Some customers may comment on a bearing growl or rattle-type noise while depressing or releasing the clutch pedal. Some customers may comment on excessive shifter or engine vibration. In some cases, the excessive vibration may result in an injector balance rate fluctuation condition.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1576796&pubid=271&evc=sm#ss2-1576796">Cause
The steel clutch thrust washer may wear down the flywheel bushing prematurely, causing an excessive vibration condition.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1576796&pubid=271&evc=sm#ss3-1576796">Diagnostic Tips
The bearing growl/rattle-type noise and or vibration is eliminated with the clutch fully engaged or disengaged.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1576796&pubid=271&evc=sm#ss4-1576796">Correction
Replace the flywheel assembly with a Dual-Mass Flywheel, P/N 24232434. Refer to the applicable SI procedure below.
Important: The eight flywheel mounting bolts, P/N 97226124, must be replaced when service requires removal or replacement of the flywheel.

Str8 Eight 01-31-2005, 09:10 PM Thanks for the information. Has anyone had any luck with this new flywheel replacement?
Has anyone gotten their clutch replaced in the process? I've never had a problem with the clutch slipping.
