Those of you who own early (82, 83) suburbans with a 6.2, what kind of fuel mileage (city, hwy) are you getting. My first 6.2 was a 82 2wd loaded sub which averaged over 32 hwy (loaded with people, never used to tow) and over 25 city. Gutless, sure, but cheap to operate. I'd still have it if my oldest son hadn't put it through a culvert. It is time for a new business car for my wife and I am seriously considering spending 20 to 25K completely redoing a 82-83 sub for mileage or taking a late model sub and repowering with a new 6.2. Don't care about power, but want to get great mpg in a large vehicle and don't want to pay $104,000 for a new hybred 460L Lexus at about 30/26. So, do you still get great mileage with early 6.2 subs?

Hm, I think I'd look for a good one from about '91 and fix it. That costs probably way less than 20--25k, and even if the mileage is more like about 20mpg, for the money you save you can drive a lot. Another option would be to get a late (97+) 6.5TD.

Have you been driving the speed limit (70mph) and still got 32mpg?

The only way I can get 29mpg is if I slow down to about 60mph and draft off a large Uhaul or UPS truck. I only get 17 city, in stop and go driving.

No, it really repeatedly got that great of mileage. It was in Las Vegas and my wifes car in 82 to 85 when we loaned it to my son who crashed it. It was 2wd, 3 seater with F&R air. Never had one problem with it in 70,000 or so miles, although it was ready for a pump rebuild when it was crashed. Guess I'll wait for a hybred sub, but the hybred Tahoe that's coming does not have super mpg ratings. None of my 6.5's ever produced great mileage, but my 85 & 86 subs (2) were in the low to mid 20's and decent.

See it that way: At $4/gallon, you need to drive 250000 miles getting 30mpg instead of 20mpg to save $16000. To save $25000 at these rates, you would have to drive the truck 375000 miles.

You have had a '82 Suburban that was crashed at about 70k miles. That means you've driven it about 2700 miles per year. It would take you 139 years(!) before your investment of $25k is evened out due to the fuel savings.

A guy I work with drives an 85 1/2 ton sub and gets 24. I say go for it and get one....if you want more power you could always turbo it!

i love my '82 burb, sadly my wife is making me sell it :( i had to pick the burb or the blazer, what a hard choice!!!!!

i'm only getting 16/18 out of it. it's not turboed and it needs a new IP, but i'm not sure i'd get anything like 30mpg put of it!!

put two tanks in your new ride and use WVO, then $4 dsl won't seem so bad:)

Wow!! that is far higher MPG than i get, in my 4x4 Sub. Granted, I have 35" tires and 6" Lift, and I live in a hilly mountain area, but i'm geting between, 13 and 17 mpg. I'm curious to see what kind of milage I would get in the valley, doing 55mph, flat ground, for 300 miles to see what kind of milage i would get.
