Is there a oil leak problem going on?

Mine has had the film of oil at the bellhousing/engine adapter since new. No drips. Oil level on the dipstick has not moved since new. I have 6800 miles now. I have not had anything done about it because I have not yet seen a good fix for it.

Btw, I have leaky transmission cooler lines too :(

I was just under my truck today doing the first oil/filter change (2,795 miles). Dry as a bone!:cool2:

Oh yeah, the oil filter removal was no problem, either. All I had on hand was a cheap old fashioned filter wrench with a short handle. I figured I'd give a try and it came off fairly easily. Some are saying that they have to use 2' breaker bars, etc. Maybe just a little more arm exercise and you'll be fine!

All good here!

Remember some SEEPAGE is not considered a leak, if there is a drip forming that is considered a leak, this is according to gm, just a little info thats all!!.....

At around 5K a little collection of oil started to form at the bottom of the transmission bell. A drop would hit the ground every other day. If you see oil collecting at this spot it's probably one of three things. Turbo oil retrun line, rear main seal, or the rear flywheel cover. Mine was the flywheel cover. Dealer service sealed it up and so far no more drips.

Is there a oil leak problem going on?This is why I was asking to see about how many were leaking http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=203105 - it's hard to get a feel for how many are having problems without a poll - looks like about 25% of the people that have looked for a leak have found one from the poll so far - under or over 5000 doesn't seem to be a big difference yet either.

I think this may become somewhat of a widespread issue. I think once the trucks have gone thru so many cycles of heating and cooling this will become more prominent. I picked up my LBZ in Nov. 06...I remember it being within weeks of the LMM being at my dealership. They probably used the same batch of gaskets when it was built. Currently it only has 12200 on it. I just noticed the leak and it was not there at 10K oil change 5 months ago.

I have a suspicion most of the trucks will have an upper oil pan/flywheel gasket. Not sure at this point if I should take it in or wait for GM to improve the gasket or else it will happen again down the road...

So how bad is the leak? Couple of drops, steady dripping, or just wet?

Do I actually need to take off the skid plates or can I see a leak without removing them?

No if it's leaking you'll see it by just looking under the truck. I had a couple of drops on the concrete.

Went and looked this morning. It's not wet under there, no leaks at all.

However there is some "soot" for lack of a better term on the engine side of the bellhousing in that area same. I don't know much about automatics so I'm not sure if it's dust from wear or "normal."

BTW this area is easily visible even with the Z71 shields on it.

23000+ and no leaks
however.....new door seals on both front doors, repaired rattle in dash, two trips to dealer for DPF, 2 trips to dealer for 08 air box upgrade (program..us guys in the snow were getting the mass air flow wet?!!!?) Chafed ABS speed sensor wire in front rerouted and replaced, and the trailer brake controller still has a problem they cant seem to find. Strangest part ... I LOVE this truck:rolleyes:

Just bought the truck about 5 days ago. 7800 miles. Noticed oil dripping from the same bellhousing area a lot of people are talking about. Cleaned it up and ran it some more. I think it's coming from the rear of the upper oil pan gasket/seam and possibly the rear of the lower as well.

On a side note: anyone from the Bay Area, CA reading this know of a good place for warranty service. Used to take my Camaro to Fitzpatick in Concord, but was not impressed. Thinking about Winter Chevrolet in Pittsburg, CA. Anyone with a recommendation, could you send me a message.

I found this thread because last night I parked in a different place in my driveway then normal. I noticed a large puddle of oil where I normally park. (8" circle on an asphalt driveway:mad:) I always park in the same spot and it's tough to see oil on black asphalt so who knows how long it has been leaking.

I have 6300 miles on my 2007.5 LMM.

Welp. I have found several oil leaks and issue underneath the truck.

I have a u-joint that is throwing out grease and looks like it is going to fail soon. There is a lot of fluid around the rear of the transfer case, enough that it too drips on the driveway. (I found out when I hosed off the big puddle). Oil on the oil pan above the drain plug. Oil on the tranny fluid lines to radiator. Oil between the tranny and motor (and lots of it). We will see what the dealer finds and hopefully they can fix it. I am happy they gave me a loaner vehicle this time!

Take the time and look at the rear of of your transfercase and see if that seal is leaking. I took photos and can upload them if anyone wants.

Can the dealer blame an oil leak on a tuner and void the warranty causing you to pay to have the seal in question replaced? I checked under mine and saw a residue not any actual oil on the bellhousing, not sure if it's a leak or not. Will have to keep an eye on it.

Dealer finally came to the same conclusion i had, that the rear main seal was leaking. Had to order parts then they'll call and I'll take it back. I don't recall any of the older model trucks leaking like this.

I suppose they could, but why would they? You won't get the work done and they lose the warranty $$$. It also sounds like a good number of stock trucks are having oil leak issues....

Dealer said a seal was leaking on mine, but the service writer didn't know which one. Said the truck would be ready on Friday....

I am just under 10K and the transfer case is leaking pretty bad around the yolk. The drive line is throwing the oil all over the underside of the truck. Every now and then when I shut if off it smokes for a few from the oil that is on the muffler. The dealer order the parts....hopefully that fixes that leak. I also have a leak around the bellhousing. The dealer hasn't determined where the leak is coming from yet. I am hoping they determine that tomorrow when they are fixing the transfer case!

I have the yoke leak, although I caught it before it threw oil all over the place. Since we have the same leaks. Check your U-Joints carefully. I found one going bad. It is losing grease out of one of the end-caps. Hopefully the dealer changes it, since our u-joints are non-serviceable (no zerk fitting).

2007.5 with 5k. Had a transmission leak at the cooler at 1000 miles, took two days to get the part. Noticed a leak (oil) at the front drivers side yesterday. Looks like the oil is dripping down the turbo tubing. Upon further inspection tubing does not have oil accumulated further up, oil accumulation seems to start at the valve covers. I understand the valve covers come in two sections!

I hope I did not make a mistake buying the first year of a new generation truck. Went through that in 2008 with the new 2009 (5.3) truck.

Truck rides and pulls great.

Got the truck back... Looks like it is still leaking, although since I do not know whether the tech wiped the drips off the bottom when it was serviced I am not 100% sure. So I wiped it clean and I will keep an eye on it. They didn't replace the u-joint - tech notes said grease leaking from rear transfer case seal is what covered the u-joint.

Other than the scratches they put on the bed rails and roll-and-lock rails, all seems ok. (at least they mostly buffed out with some tech wax)

BTW, I'm hooking the rails up to a 150000 volt taser along with switch to some train horns, so the next time someone puts something on the truck bed rails, they'll remember not to do something that stupid again.

Mine has now been leaking for 4 months.Replaced rear main seal in Dec.,still leaks.I now have dye in the oil as they suspect the EGR and PCV systems are sucking oil and causing it to leak out of the intake system.I think they could be right since it leaks the most when I pull my 5th wheel( constant boost) and almost never leaks much empty.Should be close to a solution but not really happy with this truck, too many problems. This is my 2nd Duramax and both have been very problematic SO THIS WILL BE MY LAST.With the high fuel cost ,this will be our last year camping so we will no longer need the truck to pull the 5th wheel.

Hold the praise for this thing a little while, you will be surprised how much trouble the odds say you will have.Mine is a lemon. To date It,in less than one year and 13,000 miles, has been in the shop 12 times for various things including the oil leak.It has the potential to be a very nice rig its just poorly built.I guess with all the trouble at GM they just dont have the expertise to engineer well.My tech called GM for help with my 4 month leak and all they could tell him was put dye in it and run it.Since 25% of all owners report the same oil leak you would think they would be on top of their game by now.Its no wonder GM is heading down the tubes along with Ford.

Intake tube pulled off yesterday and with the guidance from GM engineering a special sealer was used on the tube to stop the oil from leaking out of the tube at the turbo junction.Truck had to sit overnight to allow seal to cure.Valley was covered with oil so tech is satisfied that that was and is the origin of the oil leak. Not happy about all the oil in the intake system but as I said in other posts, the truck will be going in the near term along with my 5th wheel as fuel costs are excessive
