i stoped one time at a light heard a pop noise in the front im not sure the noise came from the 4 wheel drive or my straight pip that i had done friday night.

Dry pavement & 4wheel drive isn't the best thing for your drivre train, but you can read all over this site where people are racing in 4 WD for more traction. I've had 5 GM trucks and havn't been able to break a transfer case or front axle yet. Wet pavement, snow, sand or gravel, anything that will allow tire spin, is OK in 4 WD. 04.5 lly.

Short drive in 4WD on dry pavement won't hurt anything. Areas I'm in have a great deal of sand, gravel, washboard and deep rutted roads. You don't really need 4WD to travel them but the vehicle is not "sure-footed" when in 2WD. Anytime I go off pavement I stick her in 4 and she travels easy as opposed to having wheel spin and rear end jumping around. Might as well use 4 since it was bought and paid for.

Been there, done that with my previous truck ('95/2500/7.4/5-speed). The most likely thing that will happen is shorten the life of your Transfer Case. T/F case went out at 130,000 miles. You'll know it's going out when your cruising at normal speed then let off the go pedal. The T/F case will move itself into neutral. Then you only have about 10 or so miles left in it, with the last half being in 4wd because it just keeps shifting itself into neutral. This was a floor shift model. I'm assuming the same thing will happen with electric shift.

This was about 3 years ago. Put in a brand new one ($950) from GM.

Grey Ghost, you replaced your transfer case for a 2.00 snap ring that only takes a half hour to install?

UUUHHHHH............... Yephttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/redface.gif. Boy do I feel like an a$$.

After reading your reply it looks like I was given some bad information by people I trust and respect. Two different service MANAGERS told me the T/F case was shot. Worse yet, one of them is my UNCLE.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gif He's the one I bought the new one through. Just wait till I see HIM again.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif Now I'm really madhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif !

On the up side I still have the old one sitting in the corner of my shop. It has not been opened yet. I had plans to take it apart one day just to see what was trashed in it. Just never got around to it.

BTW, will it fit in my '02 D/A???

Just in case?
