must have new bolts as they are torque to yield type bolts that stretch slightly the first time they are installed and should not be reused
torque to 20 ft/lbs
torque to 50 ft/lbs
torque to 50 again
torque an extra 1/4 turn (90-100 deg.)

All is not lost, while it is always recomended to use new head bolts, in a pinch the old ones can be used but it is a little bit of a gamble. Like the previous post, 20lb, 50lb, 50lb and then 90 degrees. Then do a torque test on the number one bolt(keep adjusting torque wrench until bolt just barely moves), set torque wrench for this setting and run the torque pattern again. You are looking for bolts that will not achieve propper torque. If all the bolts torque to spec. you are in good shape. If you come across one or more bolts that refuse to meet torque spec., you better get some new bolts. Most reasonable source is Felpro, bolts run about 25.00 a set. Even if you have installed your bolts now you can still remove them and install new ones without worrying about the gaskets. This is a lot of work to go through to chance on bad head bolts. Also I have had new head bolts that would not torque(defective) so I always do the back up torque check.;)

hi guys, this engine runs well but the minute we tow a boat which is fairly big(not huge)it overheats rapidly,it has brand new massive radiator.what could i buy in a good runner to replace this lemon??

When you say it overheats very rapidly, how hot does it get? How long does it take to get to that temp? How much does the boat weigh? What type of driving, hills or flat? What kind of fan is being used? Does engine have a fan shroud? Have you checked the thermostat and is it the propper hi flow version?

One other thing, does the engine over heat under normal driving?

the engine doesnt overheat with normal driving, its 50/50 hills flat.it has a shroud, boat weighs 3000kg.weve done everything we can think of,its running a massive new radiator,im starting to wonder if its internal.being in australia we dont know if its been built up with parts.im just thinking it might be easier and less stressful to buy a good runner and replace it.hes becoming sick of it.did i mention its in a f150? 4x4

I am thinking that your problem is in the injection pump. Too far retarded injection timing. How does the engine sound? Does it sound a little too quiet? Try advancing the timing on the injection pump about 1/16 of an inch or 1mm+-. To adjust timing pump must be rotated by loosining three nuts. Pump should rotate towards passenger side(pretty sure) sound should change, should get a little noisier. Also, test the advance piston lever for opperation. With engine idling, depress lever(passenger side of injection pump, advance piston is on the bottom) with lever depressed fully engine should stumble slightly, if no change is noticed, I would be suspect of the piston, time for a rebuilt pump. The injection pump is the heart of a 6.2 and most poor running symptoms can be traced to the injection pump.;)
