Well I finally got around to fixing my stepper motors that were acting up in my instrument cluster, since I was out of warranty for getting GM to do it. Total cost for 2 stepper motors was about $10 for the 2 motors I replaced. It was pretty easy to do, you just can't rush it. I followed the advise/instructions from this thread: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140580

Here's a few pics of the process

Here's just after removing the needles with the new stepper motors underneath it (I bought a couple extras):

This was after removing the gauge face overlay thingy:

Here's the front side of the circuit board part of the IC:

And the back side of it while I'm de-soldering the stepper motor for the speedometer:

Here's the old and new stepper motors side by side, the one on the left has the old part#, the one on the right is the newer version:

Take your time doing all the stuff and don't overheat the circuit board and you'll do just fine with it. If I can do it, just about anyone could I think. While I was at it I repainted the center of my needles white, since I'm thinking about going to white gauge faces just to see what it'd look like. Here's the before:

and the after:

Not sure if I like the white center needles or not, but what the heck, it didn't cost any extra.

Nice work! I have to agree with you...not sure if I like the white either! Where did you get the new stepper motor?

Flebay, now that I have the motors working, guess what??! Now I have a light behind my speedo that went out, leaving me with a dark spot in the dash at night. Guess when I pull it all back apart again, I can fix the white needles on the black background. Go figure!
