I'm in Aberdeen SD and truck died. It is 5 degrees so I automatically thought fuel gelled. Now it has been below zero all night and I started the truck around 8:00 and did not shut it off untill it died at 12:30. I ran and bought some Melt Down and waited 20 min and tried it and it ran for 1 min and died again. same thing happened about 5 times. I sounds to me as if it is vapour locked. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always go for the fuel filter when I get a run/die or loss of power situation. Partially clogged filter is dbl bad in cold weather. Go ahead and change the filter. I assume you can't check for codes.

Change the filter and fill it with PS 911, prime it out an give it a try.

Cowman, sounds like you ran it out of diesel. From what I have read this is a royal pain in the ass to reprime. Changing out the filter and repriming isn't easy if you are "meck-a-nickel-ally" challenged like myself. ):h Even harder when your fingers are frozen! :o

If you don't have any experience with changing them out maybe you should call AAA and get it to a Pep Boys, Firestone Service Center or someplace like that. That is unless you have frozen to death! :( Cowman, you out there? JJ :)

As always, 911 is a good thing, but as you jump off of the ambulance to help the victim, the EMT must OBSERVE what might have been the instrument of injury! Do any of the fuel suppliers in S. Dakota also supply water? Pls take sample and detirmine. Water is Dracula, and will suck the blood outta yer ride! It likes to live at the bottom of the fuel filter next to the fuel heater, and changing the filter doesn't make it go away(especially if it's still living within your fuel tank). ;)

I got your message last night, but I couldnt get call to go through.. ( bad signal here from snow storm) start by checking the filter, possible fuel gelled but unlikely if it ran that long. A filter restriction gauge would be the perfect thing to have in that case and it would be a quick easy check. Other then that, not much else we can do with out a scan tool/restriction gauge.

Whenever possible, Melt Down and 911 should be avoided. The best solution is to change the filter, and fill the filter (add some to tank too) with #1 diesel, then warm the vehicle up. Pre filling the filter should be done carefully so that none of the fuel goes into the center rubber, and all goes through the side holes. This ensures that you are running filtered fuel. A product like Melt Down or 911 should really be added to the tank, and once tyhings are good, be sure to get as much good fuel in the tank to dilute the chemicals...

Thanks to everyone,

I had a buddy tow me to the John Deere Dealership and left the truck in the wash bay over night in 75 degrees. Got there this morning and tried it nothing all it did is turn over. So I opened the bleed valve and primed it a few times got fuel flowing tightend the valve and she started right up. Going to the dealer tomorrow to have fuel lines pressure tested. I wish that I had done that before I dump Melt Down in the tank. Did I screw anything up by doing that?

Melt Down shouldn't hurt anything, but I'd dilute it by topping off with good fuel, and run that tank fo fuel out so there are no traces. I wouldn't tell the dealer that you put it in either. A few gallons of #1 will help also. We typically see 15% #1 blended in for cold weather.
